I know it has to be my decision in the end, but just looking for a bit of perspective please :(

I have a 02 Daihatsu YRV - not the most common of cars, but have had no trouble til now. It died shortly after starting it about a week ago. It has only 45k miles and was recently serviced.

My mechanic originally thought the timing belt broke. This had never been replaced and he was going to do it at the next service. Not done yet due to low mileage. However, it isn't the belt, which is perfect. Next option was the tensioner. This was changed and still no joy.

Next option is to open the engine. 2 of the 3 cylinders are damaged, therefore upto 8 valves (think i have the terminology right).

In effect, it's going to cost the gust of a grand to sort the tensioner/belt/valves etc and the car still might not work - though if it does, it will be a low mileage car that will prob go for ages more.

I do about 250km a week, just in and out to work but need it for that.

Any thoughts on whether to ditch now and get something else - and if so, what? Will be hard enough to get the money together to fix it, nevermind additional budget for a different one :(

Mechanic is sitting on the fence - can't really blame him. I'm afraid of buying some other car and then having problems with that. Thanks for reading.

It's a tough one but you won't get another clean car with 45k genuine KM's on it for the guts of a grand.

if you like the car, get it fixed.
If you want to spend the money on a car that you might have to spend that much on again, sell up and buy something else.

    I'd fix it.

i`d second that op, for what you`d spend on fixing it i don`t think you would get somethin half decent for the same money.

If the belt and tensioner are fine, exactly what bent the valves?? And by damage in the cylinder what kind of damage, just valves?

Ring IVI and see how much they will drop a reconditioned engine into it for...

    Broken crank or cam shaft?

I'd be interested to hear how there is damage to the valves etc if the timing belt is still perfect.

Not withstanding some sort of major engine internal failure due to lack of oil or part failure then it sounds a bit strange.

Assuming the rest of the car is in good condition then repair(assuming we are talking timing belt failure) is almost always a better financial option then second hand engine/new car etc.

Thanks for the replies folks, much appreciated.

Well a reconditioned engine is out, as these would prob be higher mileage and hard to get. These cars don't do really high mileage which is fine for me if I settle with this one, but not necessarily for a reconditioned one.

Something is causing the compression to fail in 2 of the 3 cylinders. Not crankshaft. Could be pistons or rings. Will most likely be a number of valves but not all 12.

After a lot of to and fro I have decided to get mechanic to strip it down and see what exactly needs doing. Will cost a bit to do that but at least then can make informed decision.

In the meantime, a friend has promised me use of an 02 agila or 03 primera for a few weeks - could possibly purchase one of these two if I want.

What engine's the Primera got out of interest?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭dinomite

Hi there, the primera is 1.3. I'm taking the agila for now, so it may be available ;)

Smallest engine in 03 primera is 1.6 lt. There are also 1.8 and 2.0 versions available.

I once bent the valves and damaged the pistons in a diesel engined Ford Orion without damaging chain or tensioner.

Accidently put it into 2nd instead of 4th from 5th, result over revved engine by about 100%

That's funny spook, when my incident happened, I had just pulled off from starting and was accidentally in 3rd as opposed to 1st gear - it died as I tried to put it back into 1st.

sorry, was told the primera was 1.3 - didn't get a good look at it.

Being in too high a gear can't damage valves etc and unless you over revved the engine, then changing back to 1st at slow speed won't damage anything either

I know this was a long time ago but curious to know what the issue turned out to be? I've just bought an 03 YRV, do you still have yours?

    Hi there,

wow, just got a blast from the past re my yrv...
In the end, it wasn't going to be worth my while doing anything with it, so I left it with the mechanic and he sold it on later for scrap or whatever, I'm not sure. He did give me about €600 for it.

I ended up buying a 97 toyota starlet that is still going an absolute bomb, and I really love it - i'm hoping to have it for many years to come.

Best of luck with your yrv.
