Many ZG5s only have an 8GB SDD as far as I know - the one I have (A110) certainly does.
You want to be careful just putting a default installation of linux onto it without taking precautions to prevent too many writes to the SSD or it won't last long.

What I have on mine is Chromium OS from chromeos.hexxeh.net

If the latest build doesn't work, try this one from 2nd December 2011 - that's what's working for me.

This basically turns the little thing into a chromebook, and you can log into it with any google account.

I'm also running android on an asus EEE 701 which is even smaller, and I'd give that a try too - find it at android-x86.org.
Try both 4.0RC1 and 3.2RC2. The 3.2 has better hardware support I think.
Not sure if it'll work on the Acer as my ZG5 runs chromium so well I haven't been messing with it since Christmas and the kids use it.
Suspend works instantly on it with chromium and the battery life is good.

Looks to me like the machine is having difficulty booting from the USB, or the USB hasn't been formatted correctly. Try (in windows explorer) formatting the USB Key to FAT32 (Quick) then try Unetbootin.
I think this problem is media related, as distinct from netbook, but there could be an issue with the bios on the machine as well

Did you install the JoliCloud ISO and it worked ok? No clue tbh man, have you tried a different USB key?

What exact error is displayed? How far do you get into the install? Can you use it as a live OS?

In the last few days I've upgraded the sisters ZG5 to Ubuntu 12.04 using unetbootin and it's flying along.

How long have you left it at that screen? Is the usb status light (if applicable) flashing at the screen? It could be the system is reading the key and taking a while at doing so :pac:

Let us know what suggestions you have tried that didn't work,
and I'll see if I have any other suggestions to offer.
I do remember having sound issues with this a long time ago,
but haven't had a problem in quite a while.

The original Linpus Lite would be a serious downgrade.
Everything might work in the sense of hardware, but it's years out of date in terms of what web material will look like, and it was never maintained.

Your laptop is running perfectly except it thinks you have a different soundcard.
When you said you tried a few suggestions I thought you meant along the lines of adding the name of the right soundcard to a file in /etc/modules

If you can be specific about what didn't work, we can help you find a solution.
For a start, which version of ubuntu have you now got installed?
I'm guessing it's 12.04 because there's a known bug with the microphone on that kind of soundcard in it at the moment.
It will be fixed eventually, but if you can't wait, you might download the 10.10 Netbook Remix instead.
It should support all the hardware without any messing around.

I used Easy Peasy on my one until last Christmas which was based on the Netbook Remix, and that worked really well also,
but as I said above, since I installed Chrome OS on it, I've stopped distro hopping as it works just the way I want it to.

Try this page for Help on ubuntu based distros if you haven't seen it before:
