    FIREARM RECOVERED DURING DRAMATIC CITY ARREST
    08 June 2012

    A firearm has been recovered during a dramatic arrest in Limerick City Centre this afternoon.

    Armed gardai stopped a car and took the driver into custody on O'Connell Street in the past hour.

    Eyewitnesses say two of the specially equipped Regional Support Unit vehicles and another garda patrol car blocked in a vehicle just outside the old County Council offices on O'Connell Street around 12 o'clock.

    Armed members of the RSU then arrested an male occupant of the vehicle at gunpoint.

    He was thrown onto the road and handcuffed before being taken to Roxboro Garda Station.

    The 25 year old man from Cork and is being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

    Gardai also recovered a firearm and a quantity of ammunition.

    No shots were fired during the arrest.

    The operation was part of ongoing investigations into serious criminal activity in Limerick.

    Hadn't heard of this until just now. On here. Certainly served a purpose.....
