(The Jag really but same as above)

Engine management came on about three weeks ago. The car was hesitant on acceleration and would often die when first taking off freezing cold.

Changed the fuel filter and air filter.

Plugged out the air flow, perfect. Down on power but perfect. No hesitation, smooth and up through the revs, but obviously down on power.

Drove it for two weeks no bother, Mpg the same etc.

Plugged in the airfow, got the light cleared. Power back 100%, car driving perfect, for a mile, then back to its old ways.

Bought a secondhand airflow, but it in, got it cleared and drove it 90 miles between yesterday and this morning and it was 100%. Then the engine management came back on and it's back to its old ways.

Plug out the airflow, and it's normal.

Did i get a gammy airflow? Or is there something else amiss?

Did you read out the engine management code?

I'm guessing somewhat out of my depth here but I'll give it a shot...vacuum leak? If the air flow metre is wrong about the amount of air coming into the engine (because it has leaked after being metred) then a perfectly good afm won't work.

But then I have no idea why it would work for a little while every time you plug the afm out and back in again.

You have to read the codes to really know.

Without knowing the fault codes that were stored any suggestions would be just guesswork.
