Jetta Problems - Help Please

    Hi again

I know there are some knowledgeable people on here when it comes to all things VAG so...

    I have a 2006 Jetta 1.9TDI with 57k miles on it.

I had it serviced by a main VW dealer a few weeks ago and since then it's started giving problems where there were none before.

First I noticed that the engine makes a kind of winding down moaning noise when I switch it off after driving.

Then I found the AC won't blow hot air unless I turn the temp up to the max and put it on the windcreen/face mix setting... the air is so hot that the vents feel like they will melt. Even on the max blower setting the air does not come out of the blower very fast

Finally last night, while driving back to Dublin from the north I noticed that the economy was dropping drastically. I usually get approx 50-52mpg coming down from Belfast but last night I watched it drop steadily from 50-44mpg. There was no obvious loss of power while this was going on but bizarrely I opened the windows to let the hot air out and the economy rose up to 46mpg.

Any suggestions or ideas as to what's going on?

    Thanks

Have you checked your tyre pressures?

Heavy rain can also dent economy.

The noise after you switch off the engine is just vacuum bleeding off which is totally normal. It's not meant to make that sound but lots of them do it and it isn't anything to worry about.

Just took the car back to the VW garage to be told the water pump is gone and needs replacing as part of the timing belt kit.... ker ching!

I called my usual indie garage in Santry and they're too busy to look at it until the end of next week. The VW place told me that the heating problem is due to bad circulation as a result of a failing water pump and the economy is tied in with this as the engine is pumping in more fuel to compensate for the wrong engine temperature. They advised me to get it fixed as soon as possible and not to do any long journeys as the head gasket will blow. Is this fair enough or am I getting ridden harder than a Grand National winner?

Sounds plausible. Don't pay any more than €350 for the timing belt and water pump job.

What did you have your car in for the last time it was in the garage? Would the garage not have checked the pump when they had your car in for a service?

Sorry OP, saw Jetta, 1.9TDI, moaning noise, Belfast to Dublin and thought at first....
