It first aired in January 1992.We'd gotten sky the previous November.Among the programmes shown in the first week were The Young Ones,The Goodies,Juliet Bravo,Eastenders and Neighbours from the start,Alexi Sayles stuff,The Bill(starting from 1988,there must be some copyright on the earlier episodes because when RTE reran it they showed epsiodes from 1988 onwards as well). Also old black and white episodes of Doctor Who,the very first episode had the Doc travelling back in time and meeting cavemen. For someone who'd grown up in one channel land(we couldent get RTE 2)it was great to be able to catch up on all these British series that I'd never been able to see before. One odd thing about the Young Ones was when they showed it first they cut all the musical interludes and some of the more surreal sketches,I only realised this when they reran it uncut a few years later.Anyway it's called Gold now and it's not quite as good as it use dto be.I suppose inevitably they've run out of stuff to show ,anytime I look at it now they just show endless reruns of the later, not so good episodes of Only Fools.

Another thing about it in the early days was the signal was very strongly influenced by the weather more so than anyother channel on SKY.If there was heavy rain you coulden't watch it at all.

I don't remember UK Gold in its early days, I only got satellite in 1997, but it was certainly better then than it is now.

That's certainly true. It was on Astra 1B's H2 beam which wasn't focussed on Western Europe very well. You really needed a 1m-1.2m dish in the west of Ireland to get it properly. Sky Sports 3 had the same issue in its analogue days.

There's also some rumours (unconfirmed as SES are quite secretive about their satellites' health) that 1B had thruster problems and therefore wasn't stable in orbit - causing signal fluctuation.
