Huawei 3G modems and Ubuntu 10.04

I am trying to get two different Three 3G modems working with Ubuntu 10.04 to no avail.

One modem is the older Huawei E122 the other is a newer Huawei E353.

In both cases the USB modem is detected Ok (you can browse to it in nautilus) but whne I try to add a new Mobile Connection in the Network Connections screen the device is not available.

Someone mentioned that the usb-modeswitch might need to be configured. The usb-modeswitch version is 1.1.0-2

Anyone got any thoughts on how I could resolve this.

I would assume that it is because you are using an old (ancient ) distro.
I use a 353 and it is recognised straightaway.

As drivers are in the kernel, I dont know if you can fix this without d/loading an external driver which may not be compatible with 10.04 anyway.

time to upgrade methinks

alternatively....when's the last time you upgraded to the latest available kernel via the repo ? I used Mint 9 up to a few months ago and the 353 was recognised. forget what kernel I was on.

EDIT: Isnt it very amusing that in the Windows world a 2 year old OS is actually still current...whereas in Linux, 10.04 seems ancient?

Oh I'd love to upgrade the distro all right.

Thing is it's running on a acer net-book that I had real trouble getting any OS to work well on when I first got hold of it from friend.

The only thing that worked well was JoilOS 1.2 which uses 10.04 LTS.

I'll keep trying stuff, there is a good bit of info out there about it, it just takes time to get it all together and try out different things

By the way what version of usb-modeswitch does your OS have ?

Perhaps it's read/write permissions on the USB device? They should work right out of the box for you normally.

Hey,

I use Ubuntu, and have had no problems using those Huawei modems. The trick is to put the sim into a mobile phone, and disable the pin.

Then it'll work outta the box. No tinkering needed at all.

I used this guide with my Huawei modem(Can't remember the model) back when I used 10.04 and O2.
I'd seriously consider using a derivative of 12.04; I'd recommend Lubuntu as it's extremely light and very well equipped. I've never had any problems with 3G modems under 12.04, and neither has anybody I know.
