My old yoke is due her NCT in two weeks time and she's been a great old bird, theres a few things that i know its gonna take to get her through for another year, (Oil leak, buckled alloy, drivers seatbelt not retracting quick enough) these are the bits i know she'll probably fail on. But there's another problem, the diff in the automatic gearbox is knackerd (when your driving it ya can hear it 'crunching' between gears) I cant seem to find a replacement gearbox as they've all been shipped over to Africa. So the only course of action would be to get the diff reconditioned.

Head is melted, car is a 1994 Corona.

With a patient search surely you'd replace her for similar cost with something similar. Must be still one or two for sale every so often.

Drive it in the gate of a scrap yard and say bye bye

It wont fail for the seatbelt, once they do retract. My c5 passed and the drivers belt took a couple of minutes.

If you are sure it's the diff and not the box then that can be repaired for not too much. Even if its the box, get the model of the box and search for what other cars used it. You would be surprised how many cars the same type of box is fitted to :)

Crank seal gone? Let a Toyota garage attack that oil leak either way...

Personally, I'd run it till it stopped driving and get another car

Stick it in and see what the fail list is, then you'll know if it's worth keeping.

    I agree....

I got My car tested last Sunday. I got it serviced on the Friday before that, and woke Saturday to a nice puddle of oil under the car.

It turned out that he sump washer was a bit of a stupid thing, and didn't seal properly. As I didn't notice it until after lunch,I couldn't get anything done with it.

But,,it still passed. So it's worth taking it down,,unless it's a real bad leak.

As for the "between gears"....Do they actually use more than 1st gear at the test centre?

I always thought it was first gear all the way along the test lane.

THe Dif issue is more a concern in over all cost of getting her ship shape rather than a potential fail me thinks.

NCT was today, failed on a bald rear tyre, and smoke gave a reading of 4.70 and the limits are 2.50. Looks like she'll be battling on for another year!! Delighted with the result.!
