What's causing HDD to run?

I have a HTPC built which has 3 HDD's in it, 1 SSD for the OS, 1 2.5" HDD for recorded TV and 1 3.5" HDD for data. I have noticed lately that the 3.5" HDD is running constantly, even when I am not watching any of the media on it. The HTPC is running Windows 7.

I am trying to find out what is causing this HDD to run. I have tried some of the various task managers that are available, but these do not identify which HDD the tasks are running on or reading from. Is there any way for me to identify what programme is causing this programme to run?

If there is any data access between the OS and any of the HDD's, they will be running. If the HDD's are internal, they will automatically run with the OS on boot. Settings for turning them off can be done in power management, but I'm sure the PC will shut down if this is set to a time.
If they are external you can turn off auto play and they will wind down several minutes after boot.

I wonder is it doing housekeeping like defrag? Windows 7 doesn't seem to require HDDs to be defragged manually or to a schedule, it looks like it does it itself, probably at times when the machine is relatively idle.
