Was looking at a 1990 3CX, non turbo in an auction..
Would a shade over 15K be considered too high?

From a visual inspection it has been well maintained, near new tyres all round no significant oil leaks, pipes all good, glass etc..

One of my friends would prefer to see higher hour machines when he is buying. He reckons that if they are low they might have spent all the time in the workshop.

How do you know the hours are genuine, there could be more than that on it.

Most machines you see , the clock is stopped on and you are guessing the hours from its condition.

If you cant test drive the machine fully i would stay away from it unless you know it, anything could be wrong which could be the reason its in the auction.

Also most people say to stay away from the non turbos because they are gutless

It's not that type of auction. Liquidation auction and it was in service until being
    Placed in the auction.
    Thanks.

Can you test drive it, engine torque, gears, hydraulics, front axel wear.
    If u cant walk away.
Also is it 4WD. That can be a life saver. I have a 50HX and she is dead in the water in slippy conditions in 2 WD

No no test possible, just take a punt and see how it goes.
Yes it's 4wd, near new rubber too.

Havent made up my mind, might take a punt if the price is right. ;)

15k is high. Look at the slop in the pins and axel pivot - to clock up that it really worked. IMO 9k is rebuild time, 15k is auction it off time:) Anyway, it will make a pile for export most likley so you're better off looking private where you can test it out totally. Auctions are a dumping ground for sh1te tbh in most cases.

Yea, I reckon it'll go for export.
Its a private tender auction

Well feckin buy it so. What's with the ""?? You asked is 15000 hours high, I answered yeah, that's mega for a rubber. So what if it's a private tender auction?? I bid at plenty of those, especially Daans, and most stuff bought there goes for export. Truthfully, 15k is clapped out and done its days unless its had a full recon job done. New tyres do not a new machine make.

Relax there buddy, me thinks you forgot to take the red pills today.

Thanks for your comments but your attitude is ignorant to say the least. If your not happy with my questions you don't have to answer but it doesn't give you the right to be rude.

It is highly unlikely on a machine with 15k hours that all the components are original, so buy on condition.

An old guy told me one time to use the following rough calculation for the layman to judge wear and tear on machines.
    1 hr = 30mls.
    15k hrs = 450,000mls.
    In laymans terms it's shagged.
