I have a HP G72 laptop. And today I got a message saying I have 250MB of Disk space left. I hadn't even taken notice til now that my Local Disk (C: ) has 102GB of space in it. This is a bit odd since my laptop is supposed to have 500GB, as that's what it is advertised to have!!! I also noticed that there is another Local Dick (D: ).... and you would think that that Disk would have 300GB+ memory, but it has 180. So, combined I have 282Gb of memory BUT.... Local Disk (D: ) has nothing in it, and I have no idea ho to start getting files to go into D instead of C. Everything on my computer is in C, there is nothing in D. Why is this? And why does my laptop say it has such little memory when it shouldn't?

This is very annoying for me because I need heaps of memory in the coming weeks as I'm recording music on my laptop.

Click Start --> right click computer --> select manage --> double click disk managment. This will show you the layout and size of your hard drive partitions.

If you don't know why files aren't on d: instead of c: (plus the fact that you need storage not memory for saving music (data)) it may be a bit risky telling you how to check your hard disk configuration.
If I were you I'd bring it to a professional and ask them.

Go into device manager>Hard disk drives, google the model # and see if they correspons to 500gig, there may only be a 300gig drive in it (although I've only ever seen 320 gig configurations)

Just did this and the results are:

Disk (C: ) - Simple - Basic - NTFS Status - Healthy (Boot, Crash dump, Primary Partition
Disk (D: ) - Simple - Basic - NTFS Status - Healthy (Page File, Primary Partition

Another one is system reserved but that is only 100MB. The capacity of C is 102.68Gb and capacity of D is 195.3GB. Overall capacity is 298GB. I'm starting to think that my HDD is infact 320GB and not 500. Although I was promised 500. There's is still the whole deal of changing my main Disk from C to D. I'm out of space in C and I now need everything I download and save to be stored in D instead of C. How can I do this?

Sorry, yes, I need storage. I'm not very fluent in Tech.

Yeah sounds like a 320gig drive, I misread your figure above earlier, try checking in device manager under hard disk drives see what appears, let us know what themodel number is and we can confirm (Right click on Computer>Properties>Device Manager (to the left)>Expand disk drives)

It is infact a 320GB HDD. Just googled the Model no. That's a bit annoying considering it's meant to be a 500GB. It seems I was misinformed.

Anyway..... 500Gb would be more than enough, I think I'll manage with 320, it's just a case of accessing the 195GB that is on D. Any ideas of what to do?

Is there nothing on drive D:? If so in disk management delete D: partition and then right click on the C:\ partition and expand, it may allow you to expand the unallocated space, if it doesn't, there are ways to but I won't advise as they may not work for you and would need assistance fixing. If it doesn't work just right click the unallocated space "initialize" then format it to NTFS quick (I think its called new partition in DM, not sure though).
You can move your documents/music/pics etc libraries over with this guide, also just move music etc over from drive C: if in another folder (say on the desktop.)
Edit: Just to point out, there may be several "restore" partitions under disk management, make sure you only remove the D: one, you will notice this from the space allocated to it

When I click into D, it says it's empty. But it also says there is 12GB of it used  I don't know what's up with it. I freed up 3.5GB in C for now. I'm gonna go it looked at. I don't want to delete a Disk that has something in albeit hidden but there's something on it.... apparently.

The 12Gig could be recovery info, its odd for it not to be a seperate hidden system partition though, just copy stuff over manually, whenever you want to format and start over only make one partition during Windows 7 setup (I find this two partitions thing nonsense and annoying). Also when installing games/software etc just change the directory from C:\Program Files... to D:\Program Files...

I don't have a windows machine beside me at the moment, but you used to be able to right click on the My Documents folder, go to properties, I think, and there was an option to move the whole profile to a new location. Just move it to D:\ and windows will do the job of transferring the links and all the files from C:\ to D:\

My post #8 same link and all :pac: , I think OP has already done this, just to know OP, you do the same for your "Documents", "pictures", "Music" etc folders

yoyo's option of expanding the "C" drive is much better than moving the directories.
