Red Eye Remote controls

    hi
My elderly uncle had a guy call and install a satellite box and he put it in to his attic. Its a basic system , and the next day my uncle had to call him back and the remote would not change the channels on his two TV's.

The guy called back , and stuck his head in the attic , and removed the co axiale cable from the splitter and the rf out , he put them straight back in again. That is all he did. The remotes worked. He told my elderly uncle that , all red eye remotes , in order to work properly require that they be removed and replaced as he had just done.

This if it is true , will cause difficulty for a person with mobility issues to get into the attic.
My question is , Is this true , Or is this guy a con man?
    Thks in advance

There should be no need for cables to be removed if installed properly. If the box is connected to 2 tv's and magic eyes a link amplifier should be used.

Or a decent DC connection, with the centre pins on any coax. plugs soldered.

    F-connectors are preferable, where possible.

A con man. If installed correctly there should be no need to go into the attic.

Once in a blue moon you might need to switch electronics off and on again to get them working again (as we all know) but I have been using a "Red Eye" for 6 months with no need to touch the system.

As to what to do, if it gives trouble contact the guy again and get him to sort it, and not get you to try fix it yourself.

Might just be ignorance on the installer's part. Some "traditional" aerial plugs have screws to grip the inner conductor (in some cases stupidly shorting to the outer). With anything else the installer should have the cop-on to at least put a kink in the inner or crimp the pin on to it to make better contact.

Soldering is best but I would think the majority of systems do without.

If it's totally unrelated then start a new thread. That's the easiest way to keep threads relevant so people can refer to them years later.

If it is the same system and you want more advice fire away

hi yes it re this type query ...

I am just wondering about the job that the guy did and the problems that I didnt expect to have , but am having.

Basically there are 2 boxes in attic. Sky plus&Free to air. Both rf outs run to a splitter. The splitter is connected to 4 amp, which is run to 4 tvs independently controlled by red eyes.

I asked this guy to replace the sky plus(cancelled sky sub)with a triax 114
which he did and used a modulator (70€) , this is what he said is all thats required to have the Triax combo/free to air working at all TVs ,controlled at all TVs independently as it was.

Now the free to air box is not working occassionily.I have to get into the attic and turn it on using remote , and it all works grand for a couple of days and back to the attic again to turn on free to air box. The Triax is working ok all at TVS.Its just this free to air box problem.
    appreciate any advice.
PS The iknstaller says the system was badly done in first place and is blaming that set up for problem , it never gave any prob.before he came here!
    Thks

When the 114 is not working is it not working in all rooms?

When it is not working is the red light on all the remote eyes lit or not?

When you say turn it on with remote, do you carry remote to attic and point at 114?

Lastly is there a thing stuck on to the front of the 114 from the modulator or is the modulator connected to the special "IR in" connection on the BACK of the box?

    thks for reply.
The triax is working at all four TVS grand(there is an issue with the box tho for later!!)

its the free to air box is the problem

I go to the attic and turn on the free to air box with remote.

There is a thing at the front of ther triax - presune it is to carry the remote signal to TVS

when the free to air box turns off , the red eyes flash ok but no control so there fore have to go to attic to turn on
just as i am writing this i am wondering would it be the actual box BUT it was fine for few years its hardly that..?
    thks again

Poor connections again more than likely, these attic setups just won't work if there isn't a decent connection for DC.

Important to solder plugs or use plugs that use a screw:

Explain Direct Current? Basically, it means "electricity". It needs a good connection.
