Traveling to the US on Saturday via LHR and as its going to be my mates birthday when I'm there I was going to bring him a bottle of decent whiskey.

Does anyone know if sealed duty free purchases are exempt from the 100ml liquid rule for transit passengers in Heathrow?

    Thanks

If I read this correctly, you are travelling to the US, your friend lives in the US, you want to buy him a bottle of whicky in Heathrow to give to your mate in the US. Am I right?

If your departure gate is near your arrival gate and you are sure you do not need to go through security again, then you will be fine, but the security check will not allow a sealed duty free bag going through their check.

I got stung in Kennedy last year. I bought a bottle of Glenfiddich for half nothing in Vienna. Got to NYC and had to change terminals, went through security and in New Jersey drawl I got: "Sir, do you have liquid in your carryon bag? You need to check that Sir, or put it in the trash". 50 bucks to check the bag or bin 18 year old Glenfiddich? Guess what I did ;)

You can buy in duty free here and tell them that you are transiting thru Heathrow. They will seal it in a package which will be allowed thru security in Heathrow once it has not been tampered with. I would only do this though if you have plenty time to catch your flight coz when I did this it took about 15 min to get thru security as thay had to call a supervisor to check the tamper proof package !!!!

I'm going to buy him some Irish whiskey in Dublin duty free and want to check if heathrow security in terminal 5 will have a problem with it when they check me during transit to my BA flight to US.

My brother had a similar US experience to you syklops when he flew to San Fran via Chicago with EI and a bottle of Middleton was taken off him in Chicago !

And the day you go through, the supervisor is in a meeting, and the guy on the ground makes a decision and tells you to bin your precious dram.

If your going to spend money on it, don't rely on a supervisor being available to get your stuff through. Duty in the US is pretty low, might be less hassle to just get it there.

First off it is cheaper to buy the Whiskey in Heathrow. However the selection of Irish Whiskys are not as good in Heathrow. So if you do need to get that bottle of Midleton Very Rare you will need to buy it in Dublin.

You can get the staff in Dublin Duty Free to place the bottle in a sealed duty free bag but this will be useless if you need to go through external security again in Heathrow. Firstly you will need to be sure that the airline you are flying to Heathrow on has a transfer bus from the plane. BMI had but I am not sure about Aer Lingus or if there has been changes since the BA take over of BMI.

If you can get this bus it brings you to the central transfer area of LHR and security will be ok with sealed duty free bags.

On the otherhand if you leave the plane as normal and exit through the Irish baggage handling area you will be out landside and need to pass external security again at which point they will not accept the sealed bag.

Lastly I know that they have stepped up security on passengers transiting from Ireland because of the security failure in DUB. For this reason they may require you to back through the landside security again.
