Need help with RAM replacement

My Samsung np-s3510-a03uk was recently diagnosed with a faulty RAM chip, so I am now running on 2GB instead of 4GB, which is fine for the most part except when I run certain programs.

My problem is, I have no expertise in this area, but I have two similar RAM chips and I am wondering if I can use one of them them as a replacement for the faulty chip.

The faulty chip is a Samsung 2gb 1rx8 pc3-10600s-9-10-zzz. There is another code which I think is the serial number: m471b5773chs-ch9.

Can I replace with either of the following:

    Samsung 2gb - 1rx8 pc3-10600s-09-11-b2 (S/N: m471b5773dh0-ch9)
    or
    Samsung 2gb - 2rx8 pc3 - 8500s-07-10-f2 (S/N: m471b5673fh0-cf8)

As I said, I'm not too sure of the exact mechanics of it and would appreciate any help.

Those are off Samsungs website? Depending on the cost you could find cheaper 3rd party ram elsewhere, or at least for the same price better brand memory. Down below I have a link for the same thing for €13.

the imporant numbers there are PC-XXXXX and the XX-XX-XX looks like the CAS timings.

and for some reason some european sites call DDR3, PC3? Why. Just why. Confuse **** why don't you. lol

If you replace your 10600 ram with 8500, it will work but just run slower. Match it with 10600 to retain your performance. It's interesting though (if those are CAS timings) that their replacement is a 9-11 not a 9-10. Ultimately though, that shouldn't cause any issues.

Probably no reason with that age a laptop to bother increasing your max RAM, unless you absolutely think you will use it, but even I still run 4GB in most of my devices, only my desktop I upgraded to 8gb and only because it's a plaything, in practice most people's multitasking hovers around 2-3gb of actual need. Come to think of it my desktop is only using 1.69GB at the min. Wasteful spending! I wouldn't play around with increasing the capacity.

With all that in mind, I don't know how much that replacement is on Samsung's site but if it's more expensive than this: http://www.dabs.ie/products/crucial-2gb-ddr3-1333-cl9-sodimm-6KZZ.html?refs=468400000-427580000-4294960364-50830000-43190000&src=3 then you should really just go ahead and buy the Crucial ram. Same thing, operationally, and your PC won't care that they aren't brothers from the same mother as long as the frequencies and timings are in sync.

Thanks for that, it makes a little more sense to me now!

No, I also own the two others that I outlined above. They are both sitting on the table in front of me and I can't figure out if they're useless, dangerous or adequate! Will one of them compliment the other original chip that is still installed in my laptop?

Do you think I should go ahead and try the 1rx8 pc3-10600s-09-11-b2 or is it best to order the one you recommended?

One more question, how can you tell from the dabs.ie link that that chip is compatible?

    its also PC3 10600..

You can try the other stick you just mentioned.

Not going to blow up your computer or anything to stick it in and power it on.

Thanks for all your help, I'm gonna try it out later.

    So I replaced this

    with this

and it doesn't seem compatible. When I powered up I heard the fan and the lights came on, but the screen stayed black and nothing happened else happened. I tried once more and then took the new RAM out, and everything was as before.

I assume either the new chip is faulty or it's not compatible, but maybe there's another reason?

Do you think it's also safe to try this one

or are the specs too dissimilar to the original?

Thanks again for all your help.

like i said if it fits in the slot it will run, whether it will function is as you discovered another story. worth a shot. if it does work it will drag your speed down to PC3-8500 but you will have 4gb again.

I usually go to crucial.com and run their memory scanner. Their prices are reasonable enough although you can find cheaper on ebay. I've never had a problem with any sticks that I've got from them.

Yeah, I originally tried crucial.com's scanner but it couldn't find an exact match of my laptop model and required me to get in touch directly with their sales team.

I'm just gonna seek an exact model of the one I have and that should do the business. Thanks for all the help.
