First off, I hop I'm in the right section.

I have a car for sale, but my add has not been bumped on Donedeal for weeks, so this call today makes me suspicious straight off the bat.

An African guy rang me today about the car. He went straight to what price I would do it for and we agreed a price. Then he asked if he could pay a deposit into my bank account and pay the rest in a couple of weeks when he would come for the car. I asked him if he had Paypal and he said no.

He wants to pay €400 into my account and the balance in a few weeks.

I'm a sceptic anyway, and this sounds too good to be true. So my question to ye is, what if anything can go wrong here? Worst case scenario this guy gets my bank details, what can he do with them if it is bogus?

Anyone else have an experience like this and what was the outcome?

    Thanks for reading,

    Barry

Do not give out your bank details. If he wants the car he can come get it with full payment in hand. If some one else comes in the meantime to buy, then ts first to pay gets it.

Definitely a scam, probably the one where he 'accidentally' transfers €4k instead of €400, (your bank credits your account before the payment is cleared) you send the change back to him and then the €4k transfer gets cancelled.

This just seems wrong, regardless of how he is intending to pay the deposit. Tell him it's cash in full, in person, or nothing at all. Don't entertain deposits and holding the car for him. That's if you're talking to him again at all, as I would cut communication right now if I were you.

    Thanks lads.

The rational part of my brain was sure it was a scam, but the part that wanted it to be true was trying to convince me otherwise.

I don't even think I'll bother texting him. My add is ancient so I guess they prey on those type of ads.

    Thanks for the replies.
