Touring subforum?

Just back from a great trip from Munich to Lake Garda and wondering what people think of a sub forum where folks could post details of their trips to help others with planning, route selection, transport etc.

Possibly more of a depositry of info than any active discussions, but could be handy.

For example we got a bike taxi from lake garda back to munich. We originally had plans to get trains and the like but this was a much better option as we got door to door service. His van was setup for bike storage in the back. €50 per person for 4 of us.

Having such info in here might be grand here. A sticky perhaps, only containing reports, tips, etc?

Good idea. I'm thinking of doing a cycling holiday but don't have a clue where to start, what I need to bring etc.

If there's a touring Sub-Forum I want a Mountain Biking one! And a BMX one and a Track one...

Sticky maybe good idea (although the mods don't like having too many stickies). Subforumn, no, hate subforums. Better have one big forumn with lots of views and lots of interaction. If you split everything up into subforumn it cuts down on through-traffic and everything dies.

Sub-forums get very little traffic compared to main ones, and I would guess a lot of posters would simply by-pass it and post in the main forum anyway

    yeah I'd agree.

I suppose I was thinking of a place to put info on trips that people did, airports for getting to places, routes.... General info without discussions.

It doesn't make sense to discuss things in a subforum.

I'm not hung up on subforum though. Just thinking it would be good to easily view a list of peoples trips in case I was going somewhere simiilar and needed advice on some part of the trip. I don't know the best place to put that info.

Mods, how about a tag system then?

    Examples:
    [Touring] Best route to Kerry?
    [Racing] Enfield Gran Prix
    [Commuting] Car nearly hit me..
    [Maintenance] Headset trouble.

I'd love a touring specific forum, but its a very niche area. The tag system overcomes this IMO, makes the posts stand out straight away.

What happened to the Wiki? It was a good place for storing general advice. Any plans for an alternative replacement?

I will be doing some light touring at home and abroad this year.. One question that always confused me...

How did you manage for bike security? Obviously you dont want to carry a big Kryptonite around with you..

We stayed in B+Bs who all had sheds/rooms for us to leave the bikes in. We carried light cable locks for when we were at cafe's and stuff, but were never far from the bikes, so wasn't really an issue. They were in our sight, or locked in a shed/room at a B+B.

Search for the tag and get the latest posts, great idea but what alot of posters miss is in the OP there is an option to put in tags underneath and searching for these will bring them up straight away, in this case, maybe make it a point for future OPs to include tags if possible, or at least attempt to. I keep forgetting to but something I will try harder to do in future.

I was refering to something what preceedes the post header, something like in the help desk forum has.

I had totally forgot about the tag system down the bottom of the post, its a little out of the way, and I usually forget about it :D

I understood what you meant and had thought of something similar before but it runs the risk of people not dipping in and of threads that may not be their niche or interest, IMO one of the strengths of this forum is that alot of people from a range of backgrounds contribute to a variety of topics often offering interesting and quite alternative opinions in areas that they would not have looked at had they realised it fully before opening the post.

    Just an opinion though.

It was very ill for a long time, periodically lapsing into coma, then coming back to life. Unfortunately the prognosis was not very good, and alas it passed away last autumn. Equally unfortunately the technology was buried alongside it, and we are now praying that someone, somehere, can eventually come up with something that provides a similar service.

For now, all we have is the search function and the memories of long-time Boardsies (although it is only a matter of time before they fade away also)

I recall on a car forum to which I was subscribed, there was a FAQ sticky which linked to howto-style maintenance posts. Perhaps a couple of more posts in the charter thread linking to special-interest threads would be good?

Happy to link a few more threads in the FAQs if anyone has any suggestions

That sounds like a decent option.

Perhaps one of the FAQs should be, "Where are the FAQs?" :D

Go on your own. I love travelling alone. Just book on to some organised tours or jump on a pub crawl wherever you stop off.
