    Hi all

    Advise needed.

I am due to sell my car next week. The tax is up on the car since May 1 and i would prefer not to have to pay for the road tax as I will no longer have the car after next week.

Question is will the guards overlook this if I get stopped or should I get the car taxed which seems like a waste of money. Can I explain to them that the car is being sold or should I pop into a guards station to find out.

    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the Gardai helpline.

I know I speak for all Gardai when I say "I don't know". It's up to the guard at the scene if s/he wants to let you off or not.
There is of course the option to not use the ve-hic-le until it's sold.
    Hope this helps :)

    Thanks for that.

Whats the penalty if they decide to penalise me. Fine/Penalty points or just fine??? Or is this again at the discretion of the guard.

I kind of need to drive the car back and forth to work for a few days.

If it was taxed for May, if stopped it wouldn't be a great idea to declare you haven't taxed it as you intend selling it, if you were keeping the car there's no doubt you'd tax it online during this month I'm sure ;)

    Your (legal) options are:

    1. Don't tax the car and keep it off the road.

    2. Tax it for three months - you'll get a little more for it.

Don't pop into a Garda station to ask - they'll only laugh at you. :)
