Saorview query regarding use of old TV

    Hello all,

Grandfather down in Kerry got a new Sony TV about 3 or 4 years ago. It's the biggish non-LCD type. Cheap and cheerful, as he only watches RTE and the God channel, so doesn't need any sort of HD (heck, he still watched VHS tapes until the VHS player broke a few months back).

Recently, he was told that he now needs a new TV, as the SAORVIEW box will not work with his current TV, as it only has a scart input, and no HDMI.

I'm wondering is this true, or is the person that they got advice from just trying to make more money off them?

I'm checking this out, as if they got their info from the person that I'm thinking of, said person charged my relative €150 not so long ago to install a graphics card (which said relative also bought in the same store).

Not true, scart connection will be OK.

Connecting a Television Set to SAORVIEW - see page 4

Cheers for the info; will pass it on. I think they may go flatscreen so they can attach the TV to the wall, but nice to know about this. Also told them about the TV's with the SAORVIEW integrated into them to save the amount of remote controls my grandfather will need.

Saorview box will work with ANY TV. Some might need an extra SCART to RF modulator or an old VHS to convert SCART to RF if the TV is REALLY old or cheap.

You can even get an adaptor to feed Saorview to a 1936 TV.

ANY TV with a SCART works directly with ANY Saorview box.

(Same applies to Freeview(obsolete) or Freeview HD, the spec insists on a SCART).

Any TV without a SCART can be cheaply adapted to SCART.

HDMI is only for newer HDTVs not new enough to have built in Saorview Tuner.

All true, but whether it is worth using an old TV is another matter and the viewer should check the cost of the box and other bits vs a new Saorview TV which will give a better picture and lower power consumption. The fact that it can be done does not imply that it should be done.

But the person with the money should decide.:)

Has a switch-off date been announced in the UK for MPEG2 Freeview ???

No, but if you want the full service you now need a Freeview HD box, no NEW purchase should be other than a "Freeview HD" box (even for old TV) or "Freeview HD" TV. The basic "Freeview" stuff in UK shops is practically product dumping. Especially important in N.I. to get a "Freeview HD" box or TV as "Freeview" gear won't receive the new SD Mini-mux nor Saorview.

After complete ASO there will gradually be more HD and MPEG4 in UK.

A 21" 4:3 colour CRT could be using less power than a 37" HDTV

A mono set of any size that uses transistors is much less power consumption than any same size LCD

Cheap sub 28" LCD may be poorer picture than CRT.

The point is that if someone tells you that you need a Digital Aerial and must buy a new €500 HDTV they are lying.

It's not impossible to add Saorview to an old TV which has no SCART for as little as €50 (sometimes set-boxes that price and they will be AFTER ASO!) using a VHS to adapt from SCART to TV. Then you can still play & record the tapes.

Hey guys, I'm not if I should open a new thread but its all kinda related. Can anyone tell me what the new Saorview Aertel will look like on a CRT 4:3 TV? Will it be readable or do the STB's adjust it for the scart output (doubtful)?

Has anybody got any screengrabs of it in action? Similar story with a not so old CRT TV still in use.

If you have a Saorview box connected to an old TV then you can view the old aertel by pressing the text button on the TV remote as before, identical.

If you want to watch the new Saorview guide then you need to press guide on the Saorview box remote control. It is readable on even a small TV. The text is quite large.

Then may discontinue the old aetel one day but no date has been set.

The remote on my television has stopped working. I have been picking up the English channels on an old Sky box but have been unable to tune in the Irish channels.

If I buy a Saorview box would I be able to tune and pick up the Irish channels through the box?

You'll need a Saorview box if your tv can't decode the signal. If it's a relatively recent model, it might be no harm to post the make & model here.

You'll also need a UHF aerial for Saorview.

Television is a 5 year old Targa Visionary LT 4010 from Lidl. The picture is perfect, only problem is the remote.

You'll need a box for that tv & an aerial if you don't already have one.
