It used to be possible years ago before ebay swung in favor of large commerical sellers.
I certainly made a good living off it for a year or two but not any more.
If you were to make a living off ebay, you need to be able to supply something thats not only in demand, but at a competitive price.
Unfortunately eBay now is a fantastic place to buy, but to sell is like entering the lions den..

I appreciate that advice Benga lover, thanks. Would you recomend adverts.ie then? I've had a look at your items and you have lots of great things listed. Could you give me any feedback on what works well, tips etc. Everytime i have a look into the advert.ie ads it seems that there are a lot of timewaster buyers. It's hard to get a gauge on what % sells successfully. I'd love to hear it from an experienced seller. PM me if you could spare the time.

I had a go at it 2 years ago...
I wasnt making much by any means. I think i had about 600 sales over a 5 month period and reached bronze seller status. I was selling relatively cheap items, so not major money. Week to week i would get between 20 - 30 sales. I was kept busy from packing and heading up and down to my local P.O. I enjoyed running a hobby type business and i do intend to get back to it at some stage.
Defo would be tough to get a full income from it, but there are opportunities to sell a niche product which will return an extra income.

Adverts I couldnt recommend more. No fees, no automated stuff, you wont make a fortune but you can pay little bills here and there. There is an option to go large and open a shop too, if you do want to make it commercial.

Not in my experience, the staff are even online on weekends and go out of their way to help.
