    Hi lads,
    Can anyone help me.
I'm looking for permission to hunt deer in around the munster region.
I am a novice to this but im really eager to do it.
Everybody has to start somewhere and needs a little help.
I dont mind paying 1 or 2 hundred for the permission

The firearm i have is a remington 700 sps, caliper .308 win.
i also have full NARGC insurance.

So if anyone can help please let me know.

    Thanks.
    Andrew.

How did you get a licence for a deer legal rifle without permission to shoot over any land ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,291 ✭✭✭Chiparus

    By applying for target shooting?

You wont have much luck asking on here, someone might bring you out shooting with them but that wont do you much good without permissions to apply for a deer licence.
Dont think you are allowed ask anymore in the farming & forestry forum either.

your best bed is get knocking on doors, worst they can say is no

Id be sceptical like lee70, a man with a .308 looking for deer permissions on the internet. Knocking on farmers doors is the way you get permissions.

In deed we do. Then for a chap then to come on here with a .308 that was licenced under the pretences to be used for range/target shooting I don't think so. I don't have a deer caliber rifle but do shoot small game and vermin and i've had to put in all the hard work to shoot on my permissions not have them handed to me on a plate. Sorry don't mean to offend anyone.

Sorry there bud but do you think it's ok for a novice to be let loose out in the countryside with a .308 when all the rest of us had to start with the humble .22

    How does this work?
If I apply for a license for a range rifle and then decide to go out and plug a few animals with the same rifle that was licensed originally for Target work am I not breaching the conditions that the license was originally granted for?

Is it folio numbers and/or permission to shoot deer on land, your looking for ?

Thought the idea of this forum was advice & help from like minded individuals who have the experience & know how to 'HELP' & guide lads who have the nerve to post on here without being pillared. To the OP when you read through this it is what most will tell you travel around through known areas where deer are present & knock on doors. You will be pleasantly surprised by most reactions not all mind you. Also most lads who do target shoot also hunt deer get talking & mingling someone might offer to take you out to gain experience & see if you like it.Wish you best of luck.

That is how I got into deer stalking when I returned to Ireland, got my license on the back of joining a target shooting club, then asked around.

Im trying to get a deer hunting licence, so i dono if permission would just do. so if im applying for a licence i think its the folio numbers and a writen letter.
Im not 100% sure as i have never done it before but online on the npws.ie application it asks for it but again dont quote me because im not 100% sure. But any help is appreciated many Thanks.

The permission letter would contain the name/Phone no/folio no/address of the farmer/landowner with the express permission to hunt/shoot deer on his/her lands send the 'permission letter' the more the better with the application from NPWS filled in.
If NPWS has any query they normally ring you or landowner.

Problem i see, is anyone that can help with land /folio numbers will have to vouch for you aswell !
Best you could hope for is get someone to bring you out for a stalk or two and start from there .
Are you new to shooting? ...not that it matters much ,everyone has to start somewhere !

Ya more or less, i have shot a few friends rifles and pistols in the past and i kept saying id get my own soon but didnt get around to it but now i did so its just a little helping hand and a little info on getting the permission to hunt deer.
Im a bit surprised i got a .308 caliber first time round,
I thought they would want me start on a .22 or smaller but i told them what it was for long reach target shooting and possibly deer hunting.
was thinking of the .270 but i think theres more recoil from the .270 then the .308.
I feel more comfortable with the .308 even tho the .270 might have a better trajectory

He's said he's a member of a target shooting range and has a .308 so I'm sure he'll have plenty of knowledge about where a bullet will go without a backstop.

He'll need farmers permissions/folio numbers so there isn't much point asking other shooters here for permission they can't give.

Dont need to have knowledge of back stops ,hunting ect...to join a target club;)

I can't speak for Andy11111,but I assume he meant a novice as far as hunting is concerned. This doesn't mean he knows nothing about firearms. We all have to take the time to learn, and in my case I've learned a huge amount right here. There are plenty of lads who got a .223 as their first rifle, and, while it's not a .308 it still has a hell of a lot more range than .22,and will do a lot more damage. Maybe he want's to use his target rifle for hunting because he can't afford a second rifle. Personally,I would fancy dragging a ten or twelve pound target rifle up and down the mountain, but each to their own.
To Alan11111,I do however, agree with Lee70 as to the need to start driving around knocking on doors. The more people you talk to the better chance you will have. Also, maybe ask some hunters to let you tag along to see how it's done, help with gralloching and carrying, and also spotting. It's definately worth a try.
    Best of luck
    LR

    Thanks again lads. ;)
