Hi All I have Sky+HD in the living room and the old Sky box in the kitchen, everthing working fine since fitted last November, on Monday Sky news started to break up in the kitchen while its perfect in the living room.
Both boxes are fed from the one dish with a quad LNB all of the other channels in the kitchen through the old box are perfect its only Sky news that has the problem

    Any tips or advice appreciated.

Could be the cable feeding to the box? Same thing did happen to my family, my dad did later find out the coax cable feeding into the dish on the roof had become loose, we had strong winds the week before.

If the problem persists it's best off to give sky a call and they will send out a qualified engineer.

Swap the kitchen and living room boxes around. If the problem moves room then it is a box problem. If it stays in the Kitchen then it's most likely a cabling problem.

also check the signal levels on both boxes before and after moving them. Is the signal arriving in one room higher than another? (note you can only compare signals on the SAME box as no two boxes will give the same result)

Just to be certain - is it only Sky News or are other channels affected too?

Yes just Sky News all the other channels are perfect, is there a few different Sky News frequencies that I could try.

Frequencies here. I too have a problem specifically with Sky News but is unlikely to be related as I have a FTA set-up and am not a Sky subscriber. I suspect my issue likely has something to do with the fact that Sky News is on Astra 2B..one of the few FTA channels on that satellite.

I only have the problem in the old Sky box which I use for FTA channels, no problem with the Sky+HD box so it must be a similar problem to yours

Not to speak for SalteeDog, but your reasoning is all wrong.

Your problem seems to be specific to the receiver or its input.

The problem is Sky News picture breaks up, every other satellite channel on my old Sky Box is perfect no breakup, I always understood if one channel breaks up they should all break up as the dish could be out of alignment but that is not the case here. guess I will just have to call out a tech.

Sky employ engineers to do call outs, when did that happen????

I employed a chartered engineer recently, a long way from a €100 call out fee I had to pay.

I know some channels (Channel 4 on Sky I think) can suffer interference from other devices (e.g. Dect phones) because of the actual intermediate frequency the channel is sent on from the LNB.

Could it be the case that something is interfering specifically at the Sky News IF frequency in that room?

Also - to give us some more info. Can you confirm whether PICK TV and PICK TV+1 (also on transponder 12207 V) are okay or are they suffering the same symptoms?

Update: Probably a red-herring. By my calcs the Sky News IF is around 1600MHz. This is outside of Dect frequency range so unless you have your Sat box sitting beside a crappy PC or there is some kind of radar device being used nearby then it's unlikely EM inteference on that specific channel is at play here. In any case you should swap around your sky boxes and see if the problem stays with the Room or with the Box (and remember not to compare with Sky News HD which is on a different transponder).

I never said it would be free, that's why I gave the OP a solution to try out first. He could go the alternative way of having a local Terrestrial installer called instead.

    Just giving options! :p

I suspect Vogel was subtly pointing out that most Sky installers don't have any formal technical qualification, let alone an engineering degree, so don't expect too much of them.

BTW a fault at a single frequency can be caused by a faulty cable or connection. If the receiver proves not to be faulty, try running a new (temporary) cable.
