I'm looking to do some shopping in the next week. An all rounder laptop with gaming/CAD capability is what im looking for...
Basically I've narrowed myself down to 2 machines €900ish max budget. A Toshiba L855-10W in my local Harvey Norman, or an Asus N55SL form an online retailer. Here are the main performance related differences laid out:

    Toshiba L855-10W
    • I7 3610M @3.1GHz (with turboboost whatever that is???)
    • 6GB RAM (1600MHz)
    • 2GB ATI Radeon 7670M (ranked 115th on notebook check's benchmark list)
    • LED backlit 1366x768

    Asus N55SL
    Which will run games faster??

Basically the Toshiba has a faster processor and faster RAM, while the ASUS has a markedly better GPU and a higher res screen. I'm kinda leaning towards an ASUS as i've always wanted one for their build quality, but Toshiba aren't a bad brand either, and much less hassle than buying online...
What you guys think? And any other comparable machines out there???

Asus wins hands down, screen resolution+better GPU,no competition there really.

    From gaming point of view:)

Yeah, go for the Asus. The video card is the important part. But think about it, it's a lot of money to spend on staying indoors and playing games...

Though laptopsdirect haven't the greatest rep...

Yeah cheers I like what I'm reading:) I'm leaning towards Asus anyway..

As for the price,, I've almost gotten 6 years out of my current Laptop so I believe in going for high spec + build quality, and look at all this rain we get in Ireland I'll be spending lots of time indoors:p

There are other online retailers selling the Asus I'll have a shop around. Had one clean run and one disaster with laptops direct in the past...

Any hardware site will tell you that games take no advantage of an i7 over a similarly clocked i5. Multithread game development simply has not kept up with hardware so your games are not taking advantage of say, 6 or 8 threads/cores. Not even 4. Sometimes 2, but not even all the time and it varies by title. i5 is still the prime choice for gaming, paired with a good GPU. Nevermind that I'm an AMD fan but its the truth atm.

    What about an i3?

I'm looking at two laptops, one is cheaper and has more RAM and Hard Drive space, but is 2.1ghz, the other is 2.3ghz. Both i3, no TurboBoost.

From what I've read, shouldn't be much of a problem even for the 2.1, right? What about for, say having lots of Youtube tabs open? :p (Not that I NEED that....)

Stick with GPU, you may get get an SSD to see an improvement in load times but if you want improve performance impact on gaming get better GPU.

the difference between i3 and i5 isn't big IMO.

I say go Asus based on the fact that the Toshiba is from Harvey Norman, I tohught that their Toshiba's were overpriced. (I had several 100 in vouchers so it was Peats, Harvey or Argos for my purchase)

Just picked up a new Toshiba P750-13L myself. Discounted in argos. Loving it so far, 2nd Gen i5 processor with GT540M Graphics cads. (640GB HD and 8GB RAM)

    Starcraft II looks sexy again!

Harvey Norman are generally overpriced, but that Toshiba L855-10W seems very competitive + well specced at €900 (plus with Harvey Normans willingness to bargain I could prob get another €50+ of). Having said all that the ASUS is €860 from amazon ill be shopping there next week.
