Engine noise Honda Jazz

Hey folks, really worried about the noise which seems to be coming from the engine of honda jazz (9 year old). I got it in 2010 and it's been noisy in about a year and a half but in a kind of normal way, as in just consistently loud which is the case in a lot of older cars, so I just thought it was down to its age and it didn't sound like it was a problem. Today as soon as I started driving I could tell there was something up, and there seems to be a kind of faint knocking/rocking sound. It gets bad once I'm in 4th gear. I didn't drive it a long distance and didn't move far out of 4th gear either as I was passing through traffic light junctions for the most part. I am supposed to be doing a 2hr trip on Friday but don't think that would be good idea!

I check the oil regularly and oil levels have been fine. I only drive the car at weekends also so it doesn't get a whole lot of driving. I don't drive it hard either.

Could it be something to do with oil pressure (oil levels are okay though)? And does it sound like it's gone too far now to be able to be solved?

Sorry, just to add, the noise isn't apparent as soon as you turn on the engine, it's after car gets into 3rd/4th gear especially and from then on it's relentless. Also no warning lights ever came on!

    would appreciate any advice

I'd say the noise you are hearing is a gearbox noise: the two mainshaft bearings give trouble in the Jazz and '01 on 3dr/5dr Civics as well.
The parts are cheap (about €70 for the two bearings and €25 for gearbox oil),but it is a labor intensive job (about 4-6 hours).
Any competent mechanic/garage should be able to confirm if the noise is coming from the gearbox.

Great, thanks gibbon. I was going to bring it into a honda dealer garage, is that the best bet do you think?

I think a good Independant garage is just as good as a main dealer and you won't be walking as funny after you pay the bill :D

You could show it to your own mechanic/garage first or there are indy garages out there specializing on gearbox repairs only.

This main dealer slagging on boards is getting really old and boring.
There are good few of us around here who are working for main dealers and are trying to make a difference.
We help out as much as we can,but lately I just can't be bothered after reading comments like yours.
I'm sure the other lads feel the same way...

With respect Gibbon other main dealers of different brands have utterly shafted customers over the years re maintenance, hence the indie flag waving.

Your refreshing comments re Honda Main dealers and their commitment to customers re fair pricing etc is very welcome and noted.

    Keep it coming re advice!:)

No offense intended, I am just sharing my own experience which is that main dealers are a lot of the time more expensive. I am sure that the work done is excellent. But I personally just don't see the point onion spending more money in a main dealers when I can get the same for cheaper elsewhere. Again just my own opinion.

I'm fully aware of the issues regarding main dealers, but trust me,the same could be said of many independent crowds as well.
But we shouldn't get into this here,as this doesn't really help the OP ;)

Would the honda dealer look at it for me / diagnose it at least for free or would there be a set charge for diagnosis? I do know a good independent garage near where I live but they are a small outfit, relatively.

Also, I like your diagnosis of the gearbox, and I am desperately hoping that's what it is but what are the chances it's the engine? The noise worsens as I go up the gears, by that I mean the more I speed up the worse the noise gets, there isn't a noise or a creak as such as I actually move the gear if you know what I mean.

Can the gearbox cause a noise problem that sounds like an engine problem?

    pog it,

The size of the outfit doesn't matter as long as he is a good mechanic ;)
This type of bearing noise tends to be the worst in the higher gears,so my vote is still on the box.

The noise is increasing as you go trough and up the different gears, because the mainshaft and the bearings are rotating faster due the different ratios.

I was just double-checking :) Thanks a mil again. Serious relief that this is what it is likely to be. I'll go to the independent garage then. They did good work for me the last time and were reliable.

Can I just ask as well what would have happened if I didn't get it looked at asap? Could long term damage have been done or would it have just broken down? Just curious, i'm taking it to the garage first thing in the morning.
