    Car : Punto MK2

    well lads,
i want to get a back box mainly just for the noise :P

i've been looking on MCG Austostyling and that and they range from high to low prices?

he has a 3.5" BB no name for €59 or he has another called Injen? for over €100

are they all mainly the same?

    any suggestions on other B.boxes?
    cheers

Just get someone to smash your back doors in! :pac:

Seriously though, €100 for a backbox is cheap, my advice would be to not other making a small engined car sound louder via the backbox. That is unless you want people to laugh?

Jamie is your motor 8v or 16v? if 8v keep an eye out for a focus induction kit on flebay it goes straight on and then go for the back box, induction kit will make it a little more responsive and give it nice subtle bit of grunt! My 16v has a cheapo induction kit and its sounds pretty sweet...

Jamie, the poster is giving their opinion.

I would echo some of their opinion though, having a growl is better when you have the horses to back it up..? But each to their own. That is a good price from MCG but would you not perhaps save a few more quid and DROP it :D

ah i know yeah but people see the word punto and immediatley say dont waste the money?
i wouldnt have bought the car if i wasnt gonna do stuf to it :pac:

    anyway,
would a cheapo BB have the same noise as the Injen one? 100 quid on a bb is a bit much

I had a punto as my first car many moons ago great little car and easy to mod, what part of the country you in? I have a box on modding them and it's fairly comprehensive just sitting on my shelf gathering dust you can have it if it's any good to ya

Not just you though, we've been saying it to Daryl with his fiesta too.

    Anyway..

I don't know too much about backbones etc...

Souhans do brilliant fabricated kits but dunno if it's worth the cash in place of wanting a bacbox!

what would be the difference in a fabricated kit? be a full system would it?

more than likely cost more than i paid for the car :P

100 quid is about the same price as a factory back box.

100 quid for a quality made part is peanuts and no backbox will sound identical as they are all different shapes and sizes therefore make different notes at different resonance points.

I would warn against cheap backboxes and backboxes in general as with the new noise level tests in the NCT you can fail and also a garda can test you for excessive noise.

While 99DB is excessive a small capacity engine with a can type exhaust can easily make that amount of noise.

Also you legally need to declare the exhaust modification to your insurance company as its technically a performance modification even though it will make you no power

    MOD NOTE:
Keep it friendly please and be careful when you ask for an opinion on here as you will get one like it or not.

    Overall folks keep it friendly.

You asked for an opinion and I gave one, what's the problem?

I couldn't care less what you do to the car, it's yours, enjoy. But if you're thinking €100 is expensive for a "backbox" then I can only imagine what you will end up doing to the car and trust me, people will laugh.

The reason people tell you not to put money into the car is basically because if you want to do the things to it that are worthwhile (realistic gains/worthwhileness are also debatable), you will end up spending more than the car is worth which you already seem to appreciate which is a good thing, it has nothing to do with it being "a Punto".

The best thing you can do is not bother trying to make it sound any better, but work on the subtlety of its looks. As was said by someone else drop it, get some spacers and a nice set of alloys. Induction etc... is a waste of time and money as it's not worth the expense for little to no performance gain on such a small non turbo engine.

If you're really desperate for a better sound on a budget, buy a drillbit in Woodies and get some holes drilled in your exhaust. :pac:

i got on Souhans in trim and they will supply and it a Magnaflow backbox for €140
sounds cheap enough but what are magnaflow like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 m055y

    Alright Jamie,

I have heard Magnaflow are pretty good quality... they look good on the magnaflow website anyhow.

Your right about fuel economy with induction kit... my daily driver is a 1.6 Hyundai Elantra and that uses less fuel around town than the Punto :(

But any mod you do youll be eating into fule economy.

Years ago I used to do a bit of messing around with mini's and the same craic - never had an economical one despite only being 1275 cc

    Good luck with it!

Ok so today i went to Souhans in Trim and had a look at there backboxes

for €140 i can get a Souhan stainless steel, straight through BB and tip fitted
or €170 for a magnaflow, was told the magnaflow will be too big or the car though :(

are straight through stainless steel boxes any good?

It may be the few beers but good in what context.

They make noise as they have no baffles so sound raspy. Again it depends on the construction as its effectively behaving like a musical instrument if your sole is noise its a function of the complete system and the properties of the backbox.

A off the shelf Chinese pressed straight through box could sound like anything from a fart to a trombone depending on construction.

Honestly no one is going to be able to help unless they have fitted the same can to the same car.
I will say however that magniflow is a respected brand.

I can provide links to resonance tuning of induction and exhaust in high performance engines but that doesn't fit your goals.

im hoping for something like this
this punto still has original cat in place, its just a straight pipe from cat to back box, same as my car, and most punto's

and his bb is custom made stainless steel with no baffles
