Any input appreciated, which one would you choose?

    What are each course like?

    Career prospects?

    Supports?

    Thanks

It depends on what you're interested in, they're quite different courses from what I can see, though I cant speak specifically for either.
Are you more interested in the science aspect or the healthcare aspect?

I dont know how naive this sounds but a bit of both? I studied general science this year and enjoyed it and would enjoy the human aspect of pharmacy aswell I'd like to think, hadn't actually thought about that angle, has made me think, maybe pharmacy is the way to go

The only thing I can really suggest is to look at the modules for each course and decide which you think you would have more interest in.

For Med Chem the JS modules are here and Pharmacy stuff is here.

I finished JF Pharmacy this year and have a friend currently doing Medicinal Chemistry.

The courses aren't similar. To give you a sense of what I mean, look at what Faculty both courses fall under. Pharmacy is in the Faculty of Health Sciences alongside the likes of Medicine, Dental Science and Nursing while Medicinal chemistry is in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Mathematics.

If you're mainly interested in healthcare and drugs, Pharmacy is the way to go. If you're more interested in pure Science than healthcare then Medicinal Chemistry is the way to go. Personally, as someone whose mainly interested in healthcare and drugs I wouldn't be able to stand the huge amount of irrelevant material in Medicinal Chemistry. To compare the bulk of both courses, take a look at their exam papers. In Pharmacy, there are practical exams as well but the exam papers aren't published.

    First year:
    Pharmacy
    Medicinal Chemistry

    Second year:
    Pharmacy
    Medicinal Chemistry

    Third year:
    Pharmacy
    Medicinal Chemistry

    Fourth year:
    Pharmacy
    Medicinal Chemistry

I wrote a small post after the first semester on the LC forum about Pharmacy that you may find interesting: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=76658471&postcount=224

Finally, as for career prospects... a Pharmacy degree is *far* more versatile than a medicinal chemistry degree. In some ways it's similar to the difference between Medicine and Human Health and Disease. Human Health and Disease is essentially Medicine without the clinical elements of the course. Medicinal Chemistry is essentially Pharmacy without the clinical elements of the course.

Any questions, feel free to ask here.
