Engine will not start...

Hi, Tuesday night, we washed our car in the driveway and did not drive it further that night. Four wheels were scrubbed with hot water & washing up liquid.

Yesterday morning (Wednesday) both rear brakes started groaning/screeching when brakes were applied & for some seconds after the brakes were released.

Yesterday evening, I removed the right rear wheel & the normally immaculate disk appears to have a newer etching on it. See attached.

The brake warning lights (that we're down to the margin) has not come on.
This morning, it appears to be less noise, but it's still very mich there.

Is it debris/particles that we could have washed into the drum?

    Thanks for any advice.

That disc looks fooked to me, like metal-on-metal contact on outer section of it.

How much friction material on the brake pad?

Sorry, no idea. Like so many, I've not much clue as to the mechanics of the car.

The pad is housed in the caliper, the big metal assembly covering over the brake disc at the bottom of the picture. The pad is the piece that comes into contact with the disc.

It has a metal backing plate, if the friction material has worn off the metal of the backing plate will eat into the disc.

The pic below shows the backing plate lifted away from the pad slightly, this would be a good sign as there's at least some friction material separating them:

just removed the left rear wheel. The disc there is perfect. So, I assume the right one is as you say 'fooked'.
Thanks for your comments. Looks like I'll be heading to my garage.

Sorted - the guy in Advance mentioned the disc was not damaged.
Two new brake pads + labor = €85
    thx.,

I hope you mean "two pads on each side".

Both left and right should be changed at the same time.

+1 also its not a great idea putting new pads on one side and leaving the other..

    yes, both sides replaced.

but now, the engine has failed to start a few times...
I turn the ignition, nothing happens. Other time, it half engages (I guess starter motor), leave it for a few mins, turn ignition & it starts normally.

    Any ideas?

(you know, Tuesday night was the first time I've washed the car in years - I see this as an omen).

Does it make a loud "whirring noise" when it won't start?

Those disks should not have been deemed ok, they have been scored by the pad being worn all the way to the metal and will now cause uneven wear on the new pads and uneven braking.

If when you try and start it, absolutely nothing happens, as in no clicks, no dimming of the dash lights, etc, then it could be the ignition switch. They have been known to be troublesome in the Avensis, though I have no recollection of hearing of any difficulty with the corollas.

It could also be the starter solenoid.

Tuesday night - wash car, throw out old 'Corolla' mats
Wednesday morning - rear brakes start yelping for attention - get brakes sorted (to be checked further) - get new luxurious mats
Wednesday afternoon - car erratically starts
Thursday morning - visit my local Toyota garage (friendly & knowledgeable guy there - Michael) - looks at the new mats - tells me they impact the ability of the clutch to go all the way down... DOH!!!! :o

Thanks Nissan Doctor - I'll be visiting my long term mechanic in a week or so, will ask him to recheck - could not get to him this week, he's 80 miles away in the home town.
