A friend is selling his 01 astra. now i normally wouldnt consider an astra at all, except i know the car and its history. (a new engine was put in it late last year as the gasket, heads and big end bearings were on the way out) he'll let me have it for 1300

    walk away?

Wouldn't have thought that was cheap tbh. But either way, don't buy off friends. It'll just end badly. Just politely decline and say you're after something else

The only way that the head gasket and big ends bearings would have been failing is due to major abuse so it certainly wouldn't give a good impression of the condition of the rest of the cars mechanicals.

Astra's are a good car IMO but, based solely on the info in your post, I wouldn't touch that one with a barge pole.

1300 sound about right, 02 and 03's are a good few hundred dearer usually.

But I would agree with what the others said above.

I'm not in a position to take a look at it till the end of the month anyway, so i'll probably pass, but he's told me that he's put 1500 into it in the last 12 months just to sort it, and knows he's not gonna see it back.

It IS bad expeiance buy cars from friends. when it will brake after couple weeks in you hands, and there will be engine issue, how it will reflect friendship ? he goin fix ? ... ive seen number such situations, even myself broke relations with one of my relatives .... just because of car ... just say to your friend, you after something else, end of story.

My son has 02 Mondeo in good nick (diesel). I think it would better buy at 1250 with nct. The one rule of thumb is
when buying is the advice above not to buy from friends.
