Media Player or Laptop?

I was fairly happy with my setup, NAS and Smart TV able to watch streamed films and photos etc. Got a new video camera and the format is MTS which my Samsung does not play, tried some googled tricks like rename to TS but to no avail.

so I find myself looking to get a new piece of hardware to do the media playing as I don't want to convert my videos going forward, question is do I get something like the WDTV which I believe can play MTS or do I just stick my old laptop, with windows 7, that can play these files, beside the tv (screen bracket is broken on the laptop anyway), reduce down all the software that is running to bare minimum and use it for playing MTS files? Or, 3rd option I guess, build myself a media centre, cheapest there is of course :)...any suggestions...why oh why don't they just settle on one f**king format and play it on every device !!!!!;)

Depending on how long you have had that camera... return to shop/seller?

otherwise, i would recommend the WDTV as it plays anything i have ever threw at it including some obscure file format that our JVC Everio hard drive camera produces.

haha...but no it is a great camera, very pleased with it.....becoming more and more displeased with the codecs supported (or not) with my Samsung not to mention the apps not available for it (but that is another thread!).

Thanks for the recommendation on the WDTV does look like what I need - the laptop would be overkill as I already have NAS/bluray which work fine...of course some duplication with the wdtv and the samsung inbuilt dlna ability - but seeing as the samsung is limited in that regard it would seem like an obvious point to get a more improved version of something.
