Buying a 2nd hand Gaggia Classic

I've been on the lookout for a 2nd hand Gaggia Classic for awhile now, but I'm reluctant to buy as I'm not sure what I should be looking out for. Reason for 2nd hand is purely financial - can't spring for a new machine right now.

I'm looking to pick one up for in or around the €100 mark which seems to be what they pop up for every so often. Does much go wrong with these machines? Is there anything specific I should be checking that would be costly if broken/worn?

This has popped up on Donedeal and I'm tempted to take a look - http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/otherhouse/3451833

Is there an etiquette when buying a 2nd hand coffee machine? Should it be tested before purchase or just take the sellers word for it that it's in good shape? :o

I bought second hand a couple of years ago - the machine was described as "making all the right noises but no water coming through". I took this to mean it was blocked as it had also sat for almost a year with no use. I took it apart and gave it a right good cleaning and it worked away fine after.

I adjusted the OPV and added a Silvia steam wand at the same time and it's been great.

Had to take it apart again recently to repeat the cleaning as it had not been used due to renovations but I enjoyed several cappuccinos over the weekend once it was back together.

That's good to know. If buying 2nd hand, I'd imagine it'll take some adjusting before the machine is just right so I'll keep that in mind.

How much usage would a Classic take before it would be considered run down (if at all)? Are there any parts which wear down which would make the machine unusable?

Most common part to replace would be the gasket

Thanks both - I picked up the Gaggia in the 1st post on Saturday and really enjoying the learning curve so far. Now off to start another thread on getting a proper shot of espresso!
