Hi.My brothers 40 gig ps3 phat packed in yesterday while i was playing it so im left with the guilt of being my fault.Wanted to see if i can get some help on home repair myself.I was playing MW3,after 15 mins the game crashed.I had to force shut down and when i powered back up i found that the disc drive is no longer reading any type of media.Games/dvd/music.It accepts discs, blue light stays on but no spinning.I took it apart and replaced the lens with a similar model 400a lens put it back together and the same story no spinning from the spindle.Any ideas much appreciated..Thanks

    Thats your problem there:

    1) It's a working laser, but the problem lies elsewhere
    2) It's a laser from a used/broken console, & it's unknown whether it worked at all
    3) It's a dud laser, there are many cheap lasers floating around that may work for a minute, an hour a day, a week - or be dead on arrival.

The only way to narrow down the list is to buy a laser from an established seller online etc.

I got another drive from a different model pse taught id be able to pair the logic board from 1 with the original but just my luck different boards. But at least it spun the disc with the new drive so maybe a spindle problem im not sure.
Maybe if i get a similar drive and just replace logic board from the original onto the new 1 that might do it..Is ebay the only place to buy replacement rives? Thanks again..

Not at all, its a very common problem & easily fixable once you can verify the laser is good.

The logic boards are married to the consoles motherboard, swapping from once console to another will not work at all I'm afraid.

Exactly yes, that's if your swapping the whole drive itself. Obviously if its just the laser unit, you don't have to worry about the logic board.

One way of ruling out a logic board problem would be to reinstall or upgrade the firmware. Because the logic board is flashed during a firmware install, any problems with it will abort the installation. If your on the most current firmware, you might have to reinstall via the service menu as opposed to via the xmb.

    Blu-ray Lens

Note that the lens in the Blu-ray drive went through various evolutions as newer PS3 models were released. Many of the initial 40GB models (CECHG) used a cheaper version of Blu-ray lens, which had a high failure rate, requiring replacement.

Blu-ray lens model Description PS3 models
KEM-400AAA The original with single lens (includes mount) CECHA-CECHE
KES-400AAA Single lens using cheaper parts. CECHG
KEM-410ACA There are two lens, one for CD/DVD, and another one for Blu-ray (includes mount) CECHH
KES-410ACA There are two lens, one for CD/DVD, and another one for Blu-ray. CECHH
KES-450ACA There are two lens, one for CD/DVD, and another one for Blu-ray. CECH-20xx

It's really really easy...you'd do it yourself. The hardest part is finding proven replacement parts. I was bitten twice by sellers on ebay selling laser units, both were DOA & it becomes a head wrecking exercise.

If you can find proper replacements, I'll talk you through it or help you out if I can...but your guess is as good as mine which lasers are legit & which are cheap Asian knock offs

Retailer wise? I don't really do PS3 repairs anymore because of rubbish parts...its just a headache. I suppose look on ebay, go through feedback etc & buy from Ireland/UK as opposed to Hong Kong etc. It'll be dearer, but generally the vendors with solid feedback will send you proper parts & be better to deal with in the event of an issue
