FTA satellite probs

    Hi Folks,

It's been a while since I last posted, prob when I was trying to set up my FTA 65cm dish with a fortec star rcvr. Set up for astra 2/ eurobird 1.

The system has been working really well since I installed it about 4 years ago. However, suddenly it stopped working.

By now I've forgotten all the correct names and set up info, but maybe someone might be able to point me in the right direction to get it working.

The on screen displays still shows all the channel names & details. All stored channels show approx the same....

Strength 89-98%, occ dips to 7% - constantly moving
    Quality 40-95%, again varying constantly
BER (can't remember what this means!) 10% - static

As far as I can tell the dish hasn't moved. Is it a rcvr or LNB failure?

Cheers folks, any info is greatly appreciated.

    Rich

sounds as if it could be the lnb failing....

Try the receiver on a known good dish and receiver in another house. This will determine if it is receiver fault or a cabling/dish/lnb fault, or else try another receiver on your dish.

You probably have a DiSEqC switch too, they sometimes give trouble.

It is not clear which is faulty.

    Hi Folks,

Thanks for the info, sorry didn't get back but was away for a while.

I borrowed another LNB, which I'm fairly sure was working ok but am not 100%. Played around with the alignment, but nothing.

Out of interest I put a multimeter on the coax and got 18v DC at the LNB end...is this ok? In my head I was expecting 5v!

Just to put everythin on context, and in case I missed anything, my set up is:

LNB to in-line amplifier (mounted behind the dish) to combiner in loft (for terrestrial ariel), both signals run down the original coax cable fitted when the house was built (prob 20 yrs old). The orig cable runs into another combiner (or rather splitter) and onto the STB.

It all worked fine until we lost all satellite channels about a month back.

Thank you all for your help,

    Rich

PS: I don't have a DiSeq switch, and there aren't any trees or buildings in the way.

Run a separate decent quality cable straight to the lnb & see how it goes. You shouldn't need an amplifier unless you have a very long cable run & in any case it shouldn't be fitted near the lnb.

The voltage at the lnb will be ~18V when a horizontal pol. channel is selected & ~13V for vertical pol.
