Bohernabreena Route Question

So the other day I tried cycling up a route at Bohernabreena to Featherbeds and really enjoyed it. I see on another thread that if I took a lower route through that valley I'd go around a lake and face a tougher climb. I'm trying to figure out which route to take before I get there.

Can someone tell me if this is an open or closed road? The gate makes me wonder.... At the other end of the track I see this, which doesn't too attractive from that side...

Are you better off just going further out the Bohernabreena Road to this turn to go up there?

    Thanks!

The gates are at either end of a path through the reservoir area. I don't know if you can cycle through it, hardly at any speed anyway.

The left turn after the golf club is a good one. The route requires a bit of navigation but the final climb to the Featherbeds is exceptional.

You're 2nd turn off is the way I've done it in the past ok, though from the other direction. (Sally gap, over seefin by the miltary range, back to bohernabreena for a couple of hundred metres, and back in at your turn off). The final climb back to the military road is as hard as a jockeys bollocks, and some of the road surfaces around there won't do yours much good either ;) A great hidden piece of country side at same time though, and well worth the visit.

Thanks for the replies. Digging this up as I finally got up there this evening. As mentioned, a really peaceful bit of countryside and so close to Dublin City. Barely met a soul from the left turn off the main road right up to Featherbeds. Tough climbing on the way, although to be honest I found the surface absolutely fine. Looked at that other pedestrian path from both ends and looks a bit bumpy, plus the road adds a few more hills anyway! I'd recommend as a nice change for the regulars up Stocking Lane and Cruagh!
