I'm off to france in a few weeks. I'm trying to organise a satnav for the car, but I would also like maps on my phone as a backup. Something that I can download to my phone and can use without data. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Mapdroyd? Not as detailed as google and dont have terrain etc. Still good for road use and are offline.

NavDroyd can even do turn-by-turn navigation. You need to download maps first of course, but they are fairly accurate throughout Europe.

    Any good for walking directions?

Try Navigator if you can get it or falling that, get Navit.

Both use Open Street Maps but Navigator isn't available on older devices. Not sure either can do walking directions but will probably have the detail on the map and show current direction and can zoom out to plot your route manually if it can't
