My friends car key snapped today, a local vw dealership has quoted €135, it is just an ordinary run of the mill key, no alarm etc. Is there anyway to do this cheaper?

And put the chip inside the new one.
Be very careful when taking the chip out.
I had one done for my Bora on Amien Street.
    Cost me €35.

The key has an immobiliser chip inside it. If you get a new key it will need to have this chip coded, otherwise the engine will not start.

As your friend's key has snapped, the best thing is to do what jbv suggested: Order a key that is mechanically cut so it will open the doors and turn the ignition switch. Then carefully prise open both keys and swap the rectangular metal piece that contains the code.
