Depends on what you want to watch, and in which language.
The only legal pay satelite tv receivers for the UK and Ireland are Sky, everything else from that satellite is free (and that includes BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 etc...).
For forign subscription services you can buy sub cards and buy your own receiver with a card or cam slot, or get box and card from some providers.

Here is a good place to start: http://www.tvcorner.com/

I assume you know about freesat boxes. No monthly charge, all good channels?

    http://www.freesat.co.uk works via a dish.

Can you get UPC or other very good broadband with no tiny caps?

    Then there is http://www.netflix.ie ,

There is DVD rental (post back) such as love film. Some allow unlimited movies per month, as long as you post back the watched film.

I think there are a few of these services. The more you pay the more movies etc per month.

    http://www.aertv.ie (free)
then RTE and TV3 player. Some other UK players are free, some are region blocked.

Also Sky go via broadband only. No subscription, subscribe for a month then leave
With a Sky Go Monthly Ticket you can enjoy great TV from Sky online or on the move without an annual contract or dish - you won’t even need an engineer visit.

It's also now legal to get a Satellite subscription in another country and use it in Ireland (if they offer it). In Europe that normally means non english programming and sports.

If into sports what types are essential?

There is also the option of going with a pay TV provider and haggling the hell out of the deal. 50% off is common for large packages, free movies, multiroom etc.

You can sign up to Setanta totally seperate to Sky for savings too.

Setups where you connect your satellite box to the internet are mostly illegal.

Could you explain what is meant by this please?
I have seen posts about not looking for info on illegal stuff .... but I appear to have no idea what is in question.

Is there some way, while complying with the rules, to give me sufficient info about the above statement for me to understand what is meant?
Lots of STBs have internet connection, which I am sure is legal .......

    Thanks

He means cardsharing which is illegal, basically somebody else shares their pay tv service & you pay them rather than the company providing the service.I won't give any more than that so google it & you'll see for yourself.

As has been mentioned before,Sky are the main pay tv service however you can subscribe to foreign providers which is increasingly popular especially for sport and can work out cheaper once you get over the initial cost of the equipment.

Okay, that's enough. Don't ask questions with a nod and a wink here and capitalize LEGAL in your OP to cover yourself. If you really want to discuss free to air satellite, by all means start a new thread, but I remain to be convinced that is actually what you want to discuss.
