My First 4 x 4, DOE, Tax etc. Commercial to Private.

Hi guys, apologies if this has been covered before, if so perhaps a few links would suffice.

Me and the missus are looking at buying our first 4 x 4. Second actually! it's to replace her old Pajero junior and a Bedford camper van that doesn't get half enough use. We do a lot of mountain biking so we were thinking of a crew cab number which should have enough room for 4 bikes, spares and camping gear. We do very little week-day milage mostly going to events and weekends away. And the odd bag of compost!

We've been looking at Navara's and Ford Rangers. The rangers seem to be a little cheaper, are they not as desirable as the Navara? Is there something else?

Anyway, since we've been looking at these machines I've noticed a lot of them have commercial tax and DOE's as opposed to an NCT.
So what is a Crew cab pick-up? Commercial or Private?

If I buy a commercial crew cab pick-up and want to use it for private use, do I need to re-register it for private use or anything like that?

Will I need to change from DOE cert to an NCT cert?

I'm working for the man at the moment but I'm still am a partner in a company. I could certainly use it for company work from time to time but will this lead me down the commercial insurance route? I won't be claiming VAT or anything but would it be easier to buy it through the company.

Which should I do commercial or private???

    little update!
Contacted the insurance co. It seems you can insure the Navara as a private vehicle. The Ford is commercial only, even though the seem pretty much the same thing to me.

Could be one reason for the price differences...

even if a commercial vehicle is privatly taxed, you can still get commercial insurance as it covers social, domestic & pleasure. Commercial insurance may even work out cheaper on a crewcab than private insurance which is more engine size focused.

I don't know if my experience is standard, but I wasn't allowed to register my Crew Cab (Mitsubishi L200) as private (in Dublin) despite me explaining that it would be used for SD&P only..

Since then, it has been taxed as Commercial and DOE certified (2007 onwards). Been stopped a few times by the Gardai for the usual tax/insurance roadside checks and they have never batted an eyelid at the 2 baby seats in the back (although I think only revenue can enforce the commercial tax issue).
I also could not find an insurance company who will tax it as private (got good rates from Mike Murphy brokers if you want to shop around for prices.. most other companies 123.ie etc. won't touch it unless you also have an associated business)..

So legally it should be private, but reality was.. I can't do anything but commercial.

BTW.. if you are doing a lot of miles then seriously consider a car.. these things eat fuel for fun... I love my crewcab, but I won't ever get another one with the price of fuel (doing 60 miles a day)

Got a decent enough quote. But was talking to a Garda friend who tells me that commercial insurance in a crew cab jeep doesn't cover you carrying passengers!!!

Went to FBD yesterday, lady said that it would be commerical, but can be used for sd & p

It all depends on your insurance company. Liberty certainly cover extra seats in crew cab vehicles especially if the vehicle is correctly registered as an N1 crew cab, for example like the 2012 Land Rover Discovery 4 Utility, which is a 5 seater but is also an N1 Commercial vehicle, with a €1,350 road tax rate....

Double checked with the insurance company again, seems I can carry passengers.

Now I'm facing the commercial crew-cab issue with the road Tax, I could certainly use it for work now and again, but there's the issue that the passengers then need to be employed by me. (That's a laugh!). I don't fancy buying and then getting the 3rd degree in the tax office, I de-registered for VAT 2 years ago to try and bring my prices down.

So if I change the Tax over to private Tax can I expect any other surprises other than the whopping motor tax bill? Should it be DOE'd or NCT'd then if I do change to private?

I wonder does this > http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=78878633&postcount=6 apply to Com to Private?

You can register any commercial as private but it will still be liable to DOE.

If you do tax a Commercial (N1) vehicle privately, you will pay based on the engine size under the pre July 2008 rates, rather than the current M1 CO2 rates.......
