Looking at the above car (2012 1.4tsi) and wondering of they have the dreaded DMF? Thought they were the preserve of diesels but think I heard that VW use them on these engines?

Pretty sure it does. But petrol DMFs don't seem to give trouble compared to the diesels.

Every VW with a DSG box has a DMF.

I read that the 1.2 TSI has it in the golf (105bhp edition) but I cant find any links to prove it. Couldn't be true IMO, such a small engine?

This is a manual Passat, no DSG...

Size of engine has nothing to do with it.

A DMF is designed to get rid of vibrations from the engine so as to make the engine feel much smoother to the driver, and since petrol engines are naturally much smoother running than diesel engines, it is no surprise that DMFs in petrol engines rarely give trouble.

BMW has been using DMFs in their petrol engines for over 20 years now and you never hear of a DMF in a petrol BMW giving up the ghost now, do you?

A lot of petrol engined cars have DMFs these days, and while the fitment of a DMF wouldn't put me off buying one, I do think it is a totally unncessary expense on the part of the manufacturer. The manufacturers could save themselves money by sticking with solid flywheel and thereby sell petrol engined cars for less.
