My Toshiba fell not so long ago and ever since the screen will sometimes go all red and blue in places. Sometimes I switch it on and its fine but more often than not it goes these funny colours and it very hard to use. Does it sound like I would need to replace the screen or cound it be an inverter problem ??

Definitely sounds like you need a new screen. An inverter problem would be if the screen just wasn't illuminated, afaik.

In the meantime, you should check that the rest of it is OK. See if you can plug it into an external monitor, if you have one handy.

Works fine with an external monitor so I take it I just need to get a new screen fitted. Need to decide if thats worth it as this laptop is about 5 years old.

Back up your hard drive asap. I dropped mine and about a week later the hard drive stopped working. Apparently this isn't uncommon. Very easy to back up and replace, so do it!

I would never advise someone to put 100ish quid into a laptop that is 5 years old. It's just not worth it. It'll need replacing soon anyway is what i'd be thinking.

Often when you drop a laptop and have a screen problem after it can be a loose connector on the screen end of things or the block connector may have shifted on the motherboard. These only have to be loose a small bit to get an intermittent screen problem. Worth having a look at these connectors first before you do anything else. A screen replacement is a bit much for this age of a laptop, more often than not something else will go once you have the screen done.

The hard drive back up advice is very valid and valuable
