Managing photos on holiday

I've been trying to put together a kit bag for my upcoming vacation to Japan and UAE. I'm hoping to take a LOT of photos while away, including some time lapses if possible.

I've 2 16gb Sandisk Extreme SD cards packed. An 8gb micro SD with SD adapter and a stack of 2gb and 4gb micro cards with adapters.

Now, with all that in mind, I don't really want to be storing photos I take on them after every day. My plan is when I get back to the hotel, not to check through what I took on my iPad 3, but to just store them somewhere.

I know external drives are an issue with the iPad (unless I take a few FAT32 USB sticks with DCIM folders set up in them with me). I was wondering if I could just use my Camera Connection Kit to the iPad, chuck in an SD card and use the hotel WiFi or wired internet to upload my photos to somewhere safe until I get home.

Perhaps a home FTP, but that's risky if my computer powers off etc at home. So my question is, what do you do when travelling to store your photos? Bare in mind I'll be filling up my SD cards rather sharpish as I'll be shooting RAW or RAW+F. The time lapses, although I want to keep brief, will obviously take up a stack of room.

    What do you suggest?

Hotel wifi is never very good. It will break your heart trying to upload 16GB cards IMHO. Buy a few blank DVDs, walk into an internet cafe, burn the raw files to DVD and post them home. Even better post them to a mate who can check the files before you erase your card. If you are worried send 2 DVDs cheap, easy. :)

what about buying and bringing a couple of flash drives or a portable HDD drive with ya on the trip.

You could as suggested above also then send a DVD copy of the files home via post.

This is what my sis done when travelling South America and Oz etc.

You can buy a back up drive. Basically a HDD in an enclosure with a card reader. They will usually copy the entire contents of the card & then verify it. They you can reuse the cards.

Thanks all. If I bought an external HDD, does it have to be formatted a certain way, or be any particular brand to work on an iPad 3 w/camera kit adaptor?
