speed vans

Saw something a bit weird on the n4 tonight at about 8pm. Heading east bound just after the liffey valley turn off was an unmarked white garda speed van then about 300 or so meters up at the bus stop under the footbridge was another one.

What is the reasoning behind this? I wonder are they trying to catch people who speed up again after slowing down for the first one.
Anybody come across this before? By the way speed limit is 80kph.

It was pretty hilarious, the second one was going off like the clappers as people sped up past the first. I'd say I saw about 10 tickets in twenty seconds.

They do the same on Kilcullen-Naas road, i once seen 3 of them, and we are talking about 10km stretch of the road. I know they are often there, so do most of the regulars on the road.

Saw something similar on the N11 (Stillorgan Road) inbound a few years ago though not involving vans.

Driving towards town, just before the dip at UCD there was a young Garda on the side of the road by the bike lane gawking into what looked like a speed gun on a tripod, he was as visible as if they had put a giraffe standing on the grass in the middle of the road. Everyone saw him and laughed, then as they speeded up, drove into and out of the dip, they spotted the real speed trap, a cop with a speed camera mounted on a bike, one of those situations where by the time you see him, it's too late.

Bad enough that it's a three lane dual-carriageway with no schools or shops and a ludicrously low speed limit set by the pen pushers in Dun Laoghaire, the Gardai must have realised it was a PR disaster so I haven't seen it repeated.

Found this very odd as i was coming from Sligo and there was none then Boom! two in a row second one blinding you flashing like crazy!

There's probably nobody in the first van just two lads sitting in the second one laughing their heads off. If an employee thought of something that would make so much money in the private sector as this idea they'd be getting bonuses left right and center.

Say they were both manned and they both caught you speeding would they issue you with two tickets or just one? Would it not be considered to be punishing twice for the same crime if they issued two? Ive often wondered this...

Well, if someone passes one speedtrap, and decides to speed up again thinking the danger of ticket is gone, it is possible to get another one. Never heard of anyone caught this way (and i am sure if it happened to any of boardsies, we would know...), but i think they could do that.
If, however, they put two speed traps one after another, then i would try to complain and challenge it in court.

On the road i drive everyday, they put them every 3-4kms, so i believe every single ticket makes a separate offence (one is in the town, another one on 80km/h limit, and the last one at 60km/h as you approach Naas). Not sure if they all operate at the same time tbh, and they are facing traffic in different directions every time i pass them, but in fairness - they do slow people down.

The same happened on Naas-Newbridge dual carriageway. Since they started regular speed detection there, i noticed most of drivers go at 80-90km/h, before that it was more like Motorway speeds there.
They are even drivers who start to brake when they are doing less than speed limit, just because they see van on the side on the road...

It's a plausible court defense that it was the one offence.
There is case stated for this but for the life of me I wouldn't knew where to find the details

The speeding offence relates to speeding at a physical point at a particular time. So logic would dictate that each exceeding the speed limit while travelling through each point would generate separate offences.

Is it possible that the two vans were measuring traffic coming through from each direction?

Cause the Liffey Valley Section of the N4 is So Dangerous they really need to catch the idiots who overtake 10 cars and narrowly miss getting killed by oncoming traffic on Bad sections of the N4 there are many! Still though speed limit is a speed limit.

Nope, second camera was at a bus stop on a five lane spaghetti junction where the n4 meets the m50, first was in the usual spot just up the road at a unused bus stop. About 700 metres between them.

The third is really shooting fish in a barrel. Pretty sure it drops to 50/60 where he was.

Spotted similar the other week. Heading into Dublin on the N4 and there was a van pulled by a squad car just at the Liffey Valley exit and a speed van past the Deadman's. The van at the Deadman's was going like a strobe the amount of cars it got.

Later in the week heading West there were cop bikes doing laps on west bound lane.

It's great that they are getting so many speeders. Shame that they aren't slowing them down on any of the 50km/h roads beside the 3 lane divided road, which must be super dangerous due to speed traps supposedly being placed on dangerous roads.

I spotted the second one last night, I think I was obeying the speed limit for the first one. I was going to take southbound lane (M50) and it flashed at me. I was in the outer lane (4 lanes from van) I am thinking that the second van was inside the 60kmph limit and it flashed as I was nearly parallel to the van. I am wondering is it set up to catch all lanes ? Also is my only hope that some other car blocked it? How long does it take to send out the fine?

    its all about this ^^^

Ive never once seen a speed van placed anywhere that helps. The fact that theres even 1 let alone 2 on the N4 proves its a money making exercise
