Did you get it onto any diagnostic equipment to see if there are any fault
    codes logged....?
It maybe worth disconnecting/blanking the egr valve as sticking open egr valves can cause these symptoms as well as injectors etc.

Could it be the tank not venting properly and creating a vacuum that is too much for the pump? I don't know how diesels are vented, do they have a charcoal cannister like the petrol engines?

hi wheelnut,,,,i'm not sure bout that,,,,i thought it was jus a vent pipe,,,but i'm not 100% bout a filter,,,,i did leave the cap off the tank for a few days,,,it did'nt mak any difference,,,,thats wat i thought in the start,,,i cleaned the tank out,,checked the lines goin to the fuel filter,,,they seemed ok,,,,,i did think it was lik it was straving of fuel,,,,so when it stopped i took off the top of fuel filter bowl ,,,it was full of fuel,,,so i did'nt think it cud b to do wit fuel,,thanks for ur reply,,,i'll check in to it,,,,,regards

could be crank shaft position sensor ? if you have chance borrow one, just for to check out is any difference., also could be temp sensor. when car heats up, engine thinks it cold, and load more fuel, causing overfueling and engine stop. 2 -5 min, cools down, and you are able start car.
see if you can swap / borrow these two sensors.

hi mar4ix,,,,thanks for ur reply.....i was thinkin of both those sensors...but if either 1 was faulty wud it show up on a diagnostis,,,,,is there any way of testing the thermo sensor with a multimeter,,,,,again thanks for ur response

Sounds like crank shaft position sensor to me. Once engine has reached running temprature it's cutting out. All the signs pointing to that.

That seems to eliminate the problem being caused by a vacuum in the tank. I agree that a faulty sensor that fails when hot could cause the problem but you say the engine will restart after 3 to 5 minutes. I would have thought that it would take a lot longer for the sensor to cool enough to start working again, perhaps an hour or more. Can you test for a signal at the injectors by cranking the engine while it is in the failed state? That should establish whether the problem is fuel starvation or electrical.

The cycle you describe (stall after 15 minutes, restart after 5 minutes, stall again after 15 minutes etc.) still sounds like a fuel problem to me. You say you didn't change the fuel filter because the bowl was full of fuel. I think you should change the fuel filter, the money will not be wasted because it's a service item and you would have to change it eventually anyway. There's an old school of thought that if you have any problem with bad running in a diesel, start at the fuel filter.
