You just need a pass in Mathematics. And the mathematics component of the degree is very manageable. The statistics modules, however, can be a bit of a bitch.

There are follow on or crossover options for most/all the subjects you could study in commerce - you just might have to go to a different college to find one that suits.

Are you doing commerce atm? Which area did you continue to study after 1st year?

    No, I'm not doing Commerce.

Oh, I assumed you were since you knew what the maths was like ;) What are you doing, if you don't mind me asking?

Yea the maths is very manageable and the statistics are too once you keep up to date on them - just like any subject really.

There are follow on courses after the 3 years, (fairly sure most are in NUIG but not 100% sure!). You can go into 5 main areas:

    Marketing,
    Economics,
    Management Information Systems,
    Accounting,
    Management.

Yeah I'm thinking about Marketing or perhaps Accounting. Do you do commerce?! :pac:

Not entirely sure. I have commerce and spanish as my 1st choice but I might be changing my CAO to Psychology. Did you do just commerce or with a language? Was the course difficult? :D

I did just commerce, but it's not too different with a language overall.
First year is quite simple just 1 exam at xmas and 6 ( if I remember correctly!) at summer.
2nd & 3rd year had 12 exams, 6 Xmas and 6 at summer. I found really that the last year was the most difficult, really had to keep the head down for that year!
Overall it isn't too difficult of a course, I went for accounting in 3rd & that alone make it harder :pac:,

Best of luck with whatever you choose and enjoy 1st year!

Fair amount of exams anyway :pac: I hear a lot of people say Accounting is quite difficult, why is that do you know?

I don't know but I have heard that a good few times - probable the amount of material to cover. Don't let the amount of exams put you off, theyre not too bad! :)

I won't ;) I think I'll try for Psychology anyway and sure I can always change courses after a year, can't I?(That is, if I have the points required)

Yea I'd say you could change after the year once you have the points and there's a place available etc.

Without trying to insult an awful lot of people here - why do you want to do Commerce?

Career Guidance Counsellor :o  Still, I wanted to do it because the course seemed interesting, and I want a job that involves travelling, so I assumed doing something like commerce, along with a language, would enable me to do so. However it's not set in stone and I'm looking into other options. Why do you ask?

The popularity of the course has always surprised me, is all. I can understand that it might appeal to some people, as with any course, but it seems to be a fallback for an awful lot of people. Do many people dream of being an accountant when they grow up? Or is it the glamorous world of "business" they're hoping for?

I suppose its a very general sort of course, in that you don't have to have done business or accounting to get into it unlike other courses and some people may do it when they don't know what exactly they want. Also as far as I know, many people go into many different areas after they finish it and don't end up in the business world at all.
