    Hi Lads,

My cuz (Lee) installed linux mint 12 on my laptop about 6 months ago and it's been brilliant until this morning.

When i try to start the machine, i get just a screen full of text -
I brought the laptop back out to my cousins and he removed the hard drive and put it in a docking station, and the error message in the title popped up.

Anyway, Lee has put a new hard drive into the machine and is trying to work away on the original drive at the minute - there is some stuff on it that I cannot afford to lose.

    Any help???

    Thanks.

Could be your filesystem or the hardware.

Looking at dmesg when the harddrive is connected via the docking station should determine which. If it connects fine but wont mount you can try to open the device with fdisk.

If it's the filesystem you stand a good chance of recovering your files, if it's the hardware you don't(without paying a lot of money).

Thanks - will pass that on - doesnt mean a lot to me tbh :D

Oh forgot to say that i have XP running on a partition on the drive also, and it's running no problem, dunno if that tells you any more!

Have you made any changes to your /etc/fstab file recently? Added any new hardware? That kind of thing?

Nope - no changes to any file, or any new hardware.

Only change was that I installed Filezilla a week ago, but have been using it since then without any issues.

One other thing - the laptop was shut down on Sunday night by holding down power button by a mate - dunno if this could cause problems???

If its been hard powered off there is a chance the FS could have been corrupted.
You can try fixing this with fsck. Something like this...

fsck /dev/sda1 [or whatever the drive is]

You can try a more intrusive fix with

    fsck --yvf /dev/sda1

but be warned that it could cause some files to be moved into /lost+found.

Before trying fsck I'd have a go at manual mount using something like
    mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
it might give an indication of the problem.
