Recording TV on DVD player after changeover to Saorview??

Just wondering if anyone can answer for me...

At the moment I have a Toshiba DVD Player that I can record onto the hard drive (?) of, which I do as I NEVER get to watch tv at the time the shows are actually on. We bought a new TV that is Saorview enabled but the DVD player seems to be only tuning the old analogue channels still. (Dont have SKY or anything)

(I am technologically challenged so feel free to speak like you are explaining to a 5 year old :D) Does this mean the end of recording off the tv once the changeover happens or is there some way to tune the DVD player to pick up the Saorview channels?

After analogue switchoff the analogue tuner in the recorder will not receive any tv channels from Oct 24th.

Your options will be to attach a separate Saorview receiver to the recorder via scart, set the recorder timer to record via the scart and also set the timer on the Saorview receiver. Another option may be to attach the recorder to a scart out on the Saorview TV and set a record timer on the Saorview TV (if available). Some connection examples here - http://www.rtenl.ie/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/connecting_a_television_set_to_saorview.pdf

There may be Saorview PVRs available by the time analogue switchoff happens on Oct 24th.

There are a number of non-Saorview approved PVRs on the market that appear to record the Saorview channels without any major problems.

Following on, will a saorview approved tv allow you to record 1 channel while watching another. I don't thinkj so myself, but there are a lot of confused folks out there whoi still think they can record away like in analogue days. Is only way to do it via scart & tuning the saorview content through the av channel on the video/dvd ?

Will a saorview box allow the same via the scart outlet?

Or are video/dvd recorders old hat after 24th October?

Unless the TV has twin/dual tuners, which almost none do, then at best it will only allow you to record a channel on the same multiplex. Fine while only one multiplex is being broadcast on Saorview, but will start posing problems when the second multiplex comes into full service.

Yes - in the same fashion as recording from a satellite or cable receiver through its SCART outlet (if you're not using the RF modulator). If the VCR or DVD recorder supports recording when pin 8 on the SCART socket is live and the Saorview STB supports its output, you may also be able to set up timer recordings solely through the Saorview receiver, just ensure that you have a blank tape or disc ready with enough capacity to record.

Will a saorview box allow the same via the scart outlet?
If you mean that a Saorview STB will allow one channel to be viewed from one SCART outlet (say the one labelled TV), and another for the other (e.g. labelled VCR), or give a different channel via its one SCART outlet separate to the HDMI outlet then the answer is no. I have heard in France that some receivers for TNT (their DTT service) have been sold with capabilities for two independent outputs through each SCART socket using a twin tuner, but there are none that I know of for Saorview (and even more curious in my view, none ever approved by Freeview in the UK either - the closest to realising this was the very early Pace PVR which allowed a recording to be played through the VCR SCART while watching a live channel through the TV SCART).
Or are video/dvd recorders old hat after 24th October?
Their analogue tuners will be effectively redundant after that date, but they will still be fine for playback purposes and of course be able to record through other inputs e.g. SCART. The general shift however is moving more towards twin-tuner PVR's even though there are none with official Saorview approval yet, and internet streaming of catch-up services e.g. RTÉ Player, through various different mediums not just tied to a computer.

Some Saorview TVs can also output to scart so that would be recordable on DVDrecorder.

Are all Saorview TVs meant to have usb recording or is this an extra above the Saorview specification?

Seems to work well on Hannspree but somewhat more finicky on Samsung

It is not in the specification. Hopefully in the next year a true recording dual tuner box will be approved. Then RTENL will start sending series link data 24/7. This will answer questions like this.

For the moment there is no neat simple solution

But there is a cheap neat simple solution now. As the OP already has a Saorview approved TV, he doesn't need an expensive dual tuner PVR. A cheap single tuner Saorview PVR will suffice.

It depends. It might be advisable to wait until October in case a proper unit is launched. Between now and October your existing setup will work fine.
