Flying to US Aer Lingus - cabin baggage

Should I keep my sleeping bag with me as cabin baggage? It's pretty essential for my trip so don't really want to check it in as it could get detached from my rucksack. Am I allowed a small backpack & a sleeping bag onboard? Guessing no from looking at their website, although I had heard recently that you could! :(

Everything you have should be inside a bag, including your sleeping bag.

A sleeping bag won't fit into a small rucksack type for holding my wallet/a drink/ipod/book though :/ I'm guessing if I bring a HANDBAG I'll be allowed but I won't if it's a rucksack. Some handbags are nearly the size of a bloody rucksack! :(

The rule is one bag plus a personal item (i.e. handbag/laptop bag) which can be placed beneath the seat in front of you. You may get away with more - but you can't count on that'
