Can anyone help please,I bought a car of donedeal last November all was fine until this saturday morning,I returned from work(I was away all week)started the car and it sounded like the engine was going to jump out at me.took it to a family friend machanic who said the valves are wrecked, probaly easier to replace the whole engine....I don't have the money to do this at all-so my question is can I claim on my insurance?? I'm only 3rd party fire and thieft and the car was fine the week before and I don't know what to do.I paid enough for this 10 year old car now and I'm sick to death now this has happened,if anyone knows anything about insurance it would be greatly appreciated

Insurance won't cover anything what so ever. I am assuming you bought it privately and therefore you have no comeback at all.

Its an unfortunate situation but one you will have to live with. Get your mechanic to see if he can source and fit a second hand engine and see if you can somehow pay for it

If you bought it privately it isn't a consumer issue, and if you did buy in November a typical dealer sale would normally only cover engine & gearbox for six months.

Thanks Whippet, thats what I thought.... but not wanted to hear!It was bought privately and never a problem since day 1 till this saturday,I guess I'll try the breakers tomorrow for prices on 320d auto engines-hopefully some about and not to expensive.
    Thanks again for the reply

you should also post on the Motors forum, there is a lot of BMW heads there who should be able to point you in the right direction.

@run_Forrest_run - Please don't tell the OP to post again in the Motors forum as this can result in duplicate threads.

Instead, please use the Report Post function to alert a moderator who can move it to the correct forum.

Maybe get a second diagnosis first to be on the safe side.

I would try and get a second opinion. If the engine is running but making an awful noise doesn't mean it is valves. It won't be too cheap to pick up a secondhand engine for the same. It might be cheaper to repair.

It's hard to believe a car that was idle for a few days was wrecked when restarted, a second opinion is in order.

Op I would absolutely get a second opinion on the and would recommend Gary from Chelmsford motors. It it requires a new engine, it MIGHT not be worth replacing it...

If it is a petrol E46 then it is quite likely that this happened. It should still be cheaper to repair the engine than to replace it though.

As a petrol e46 owner, do you mind me asking what exactly is the fault here? And what engines does it happen too?

If it's a 320d then chances are that the swirl flaps popped their clogs, so then I'm afraid that a secondhand engine is the only option:(. The swirl flaps injesting themselves into the engine is certainly not unheard of, unfortunately for the OP.

it is a diesel, secondly I have never heard of this issue you claim with the petrol engine. i know the 2L valvetronics arent the best, but the 6 cylinder engines are fairly bullet proof...

if you replace or repair the engine, get the swirl flaps blanked!!! might be worth getting a price from nissan doctor on these forums, he did an engine rebuild not too long ago...

Did your mechanic give any explaination of what he has found caused the valves to be damaged?

Valves don't really just 'fail' so something else must have caused the damage to them. As has been said, swirl flaps can get ingested into these engines.

Repair is still likely to be cheaper and with a more certain outcome(when done properly) then a second hand engine.

As for the comments about the petrol E46 engines, although not relevant here. the early 6 cylinder ones were ok but the later N series valvetronic engines can suffer valvetronic actuator failure which can cause valve damage, also the chain tensioners are a poor design and can fail leading to the chain slipping and valve damage too.
