Do not attempt to drive uninsured in this country.

•Driving without insurance is generally punishable by a fine of up to €2,500, disqualification of one year or more for a first offence and two years or more for a second offence, and, at the discretion of the court, a term of imprisonment not exceeding six months.

•In the case of a first offence of driving without insurance, the court may decide in special cases not to impose a period of disqualification or to impose a period of disqualification of less than a year. Where the court decides not to impose a disqualification, drivers convicted of a first offence of driving without insurance will incur 5 penalty points on their licence record in addition to any other penalty imposed by the court

It's illegal and irresponsible to drive uninsured. Don't do it.

Yes but if fine is inposed, and i have to go to court, but i go back home in 6 days. Will it really matter if i am not here. Essentially my question is, will the guarda go through with it all if i am leaving the country in a couple of days?

Your friend would be charged for allowing you to drive their car which is not insured or taxed.

The car will be taken from you.

If you ever return to Ireland you will be charged. It's could be possible to stop you from leaving the country or brought back because of 'special ' relations between the EU and Ukraine

Use a taxi or public transport like others would.

Yeah they'll bring you to court when they catch you and impose a big fine and it'll be an awful lot of trouble for a bit of shopping. Get a taxi!

To me it sounds like someone is just trolling...

You seem to be only worried if you are stopped by the guards, what if you hit a child or collide with a car and kill or maim the main breadwinner of a family.
Try thinking of other people instead of yourself and get public transport!

Can somebody with concrete knowledge please give me definitive answer?
It is only rural roads where guarda presence is very rare, but in any case i would like strong answer to above question.

You want help in breaking the law? Eh....no !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,766 ✭✭✭juan.kerr

A bit stupid to expect someone here to give you carte blanche to drive illegally here.

I hope you're caught, they realise you plan to leave in a few days and lock you up.

You could be summonsed to the next sitting of the district court if the Gardai felt like it

    Definitely troll.

The question is above if you can read? I do not ask for help braking law, i only ask if an edict will be placed upon me, I ask will the officer who stopped me fine me or require me to attend a court session at a later date, If my departure date is so close to my apprehension.
    Do you understand?

I always hate seeing this as a reason to get insurance, the child will still be dead and the breadwinner will still be maimed for life, no amount of money will fix this and having insurance will not prevent it.

OP. if you are insured in your own country why do you not ask your insurance company are you insured to drive someone elses car abroad.

I would imagine that as a non resident with little intention to return, you might be dened bail and held pending trial.*

*Highly unlikely but maybe a detterrent

if your stoped the car will be taking off you , and because your a flight risk you'll be taken to court and be dealth with there and then so you'll have no time to run.

But the question simply appeals for a rebuttal concerning your country's bylaw. It does not provocate an answer which "promotes.. illegal activity"
I only ask if an edict will be placed upon me, I ask will the officer who stopped me fine me or require me to attend a court session at a later date, Or will this minor offense be overlooked due to the fact that my departure date is so close to my apprehension and it is a first time transgression in the state.
Please quote the part where my question "Breaches the forums terms of use"?
I challenge anyone to give me an educated answer to the above question. Please.

Best thing is to call in to local Garda station and ask them, just in case there may be a special diplomatic exemption for yourself that we don't know about.

Perhaps you should call into your local Garda station and ask the desk Sargeant what he thinks?

In fact I'd go so far as to recommend it. It will leave your 'friend' in no doubt.

It is not a minor offense, and it will not be overlooked because you're a tourist. You'll be held in custody until the next court sitting. You will miss your flight home, and if the court decides to "only" impose a fine on you, you will have to pay that, as well as the cost of a new flight.

The car will be taken and impounded until the owner can produce all the correct documents to prove he owns it, it is taxed, insured and NCTd if required. The "holding fee" for the car is approx €120 a day until the paperwork is supplied, and if it transpires the car was not taxed, for example, the owner will also be fined and receive penalty points for that as well.

    Walk.

And this is definitive? This will indubitably be the outcome if my friend attempts to drive under the described circumstances?
