    Hi,
I am planning to buy a new DSLR Nikon d7000 and a lense 18-200mm. Could any one recommend a shop in Dublin, where I can buy directly. I don't want to buy online.

    Thanks in advance.
    cheers

I got my D7000 in Gunns. Also everyone should support Gunn's they are awesome.

Why don't you want to buy online?

You will be very very happy with the D7000, its an absolute superb camera.

Yep I have to agree with John and its never let me down even once. The only thing you need to worry about is the exposure, the new metering can be a little awkward at first and blows out highlights but if you spend enough time getting used to the settings it should be fine. It's quite fast too, I was shooting the F1 today at 6fps and I didn't have too many issues keeping up. Shop around a little though, also a few shops still don't have the kit in stock and have them on back order. I think Conns have it at the moment though, if you want to know anything else about the camera shoot me a message, I use it all the time and don't mind answering any questions on the D7000. :)

Thanks John. at present I am having d3000 and I was waiting to get d7000 for last several months.I've seen hundreds of videos of its quality and functions and very much addicted to buy it. Hope I will enjoy with d7000.

    Thanks lisatiffany.

The last 15 months , I was dreaming Nikon d7000 and I hope now the time come to grab it. After seeing hundreds of videos on its fuctions, I was so addidcted to buy only d7000 and stop watching any other videos. first I thought of buy d7000 with basic kit lense, then decided to buy 18-200mm and 35 mm for low light capturing shots.

    What lenses are you using?

    Thanks and regards,
    Jaydev

To be honest, the only thing I ever bought there was a tripod. And that was about 15 years ago. I don't live in Dublin any more, and buy everything online. But just the past week, I've bought a camera and lens (Sony Nex7 and Sigma 30mm) from Conns through their website, and was very impressed with the service and price (and the next day delivery).

I shoot Sony, which not all stores stock, so my shop choices in Ireland, and therefore experience of some of them, are a bit limited.

I have bought camera and lens in Berminghams, found them very good. Some people are put off by the younger guy there but his bark is worse than his bite. And you can haggle a bit with him on price.

Bought my D90 from there [Berminghams] and have no complaints, lovely staff and very helpful.

I am also looking into upgrading my auld EOS 300D to the D7000. I was in between the D7000 and the D800 but the fact that D800 are so hard to get and also that I find hard to justify a price tag of almost 3 times the D7000s I had no choice but to go for the last one.

Guns and conns have good offers and they both have them in stock (1319 and 1299 accordingly - with lens 18-105). I have found cheaper options on ebay (camera plus Nikkor 18-55 and 55-200 lens for 1200 euro) but I still think I rather buy on a shop than online (in case I have any issues).

I am also thinking of getting the Tokina 11-16 2.8f lens, I have heard really good things about it. Also need a Flash so the SB700 is probably the best option.

My only question or doubt is if to go for the Nikkor 18-200 or just buy the camera body and get two different lens like the Tamron 28-75 mm and
Sigma 70-200mm, but that will mean spend 1000 euro extra

I have heard that lens aberration is noticable on lens with such amplitude. Anyone have had any issues with the Nikkor 18-200?

If you order on Jessops.com they have great cash back deals and all on at them minute plus they have a sale on for the Queen (might work out better)

I have that lens for my D300s and its like a dream!!! the best investment i made was my 24-70mm lens!!! :pac:

I shoot a D7000 and I love it! Favourite lens? Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VRII. Then my Nikon 60 f2.8 macro followed by my Nikon 50 f1.4G. Have a few Sigma Lenses - good, but not as good as Nikon.

You never waste money spent on good glass! You might find yourself changing your camera body every few years but good lenses almost last forever.

A good source of lenses if funds are tight is second hand on adverts.ie

PS +1 for Gunns - great family run shop - they are all knowledgeable and friendly!

Good to know, I guess I could get the 18-200 then plus the 11-16 and save some money.

Btw, anyone has done any astrophotography with this camera? I might google a bit and see how it performs

Darn sorry I thought I replied to your question about the lenses. I actually use the kit lens quite a lot and have had no problems with it. It seems sharp enough and definitely wide enough with a decent zoom. I use it with a 300mm lens every now and then too and it has no trouble keeping up. You should be fine with the kit lens, its a great little lens and even in low light does quite well. I still have a little trouble with the exposure on the D7000, it seems to be the matrix metering but I'm not sure. If you search around the net you will find a lot of threads and forums that mention the exposure issues, don't let that put you off though just learn to control the exposure.

    Hi Bohrio,
I've seen many videos on youtube for Nikon 18-200 lense and none of them has mentioned any issues except a small the one mentioned on the following video by a famous photography journalist Gordan.

I have read several reviews, there is a website that I particulary like where they test this lens and they say is a good all-rounder but unless you dont want to have to change lenses all the time they end up saying that for the price of this lens you can get 2 cheaper standard or telephoto lens.

I still dont know what I will do, guess I wontb e buying the camera for another couple of weeks so that will give me time to think about what is best.

    Here is the review

I think 18-200 is a bit of a stretch, and quality must be compromised somewhere.

I'd have a look at the Tamron 17-55 f2.8 and maybe the Nikon 55-200.

    Hi,

I am planning to buy nikon d7000 and a 18-200mm lens. Since the price in Dublin is about 20% more than Amazon price, I decided to buy it online.
Could anyone suggest, their experience buying camera and lens online? Will have any fault risk on delivery?
Any one have any experience buying cameras on-line, especially from Amazon?

    thanks in advance.

    cheers

Every camera, lens and accessory I've bought in the past 12 years has been purchased online. I'm not going to count it all up, but it's a lot of stuff. From Amazon, ebay, Pixmania, WEX, Conns and a host of others. I've never personally had a problem, except for a few things getting delayed in the post, but that's not to say things can't go wrong (the same as any other online purchase). Buy from somewhere reputable, and it should be fairly painless to sort out any issues should they arise.

Buying a camera or lens is no different from buying anything else online. Except if you're buying second-hand - obviously then you don't get to inspect the item before purchase, so you're taking a bit more of a risk, as you have to trust the seller's description.

I'm a web developer for a major ecommerce company (none of the ones listed above), so maybe it's just second nature for me to buy online.

Under EU Distance Selling legalisation, you have a 7 day period form the day you receive any goods bought online to send them back form any reason whatsoever, with the only cost being the postage costs to return the item:

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/consumer_affairs/consumer_protection/consumer_rights/distance_selling.html

Also, check out the returns policy of whoever you're buying the gear from - there could be additional cover, and it will give you peace of mind in the unlikely event that something goes wrong.

Also, always buy by credit card or PayPal (not wire transfer, cheque or anything like that). CC companies (and PayPal) offer you additional protection on purchases (both on and off line). For example, a few years ago, we bought a grand's worth of kitchen tiles in a shop (not online, but the principle's the same). Before we got delivery, the shop went out of business. As we bought on a credit card, we just went to the CC company, and they refunded us in full. If we had paid in cash, we would have been at the bottom of a long list of creditors, and would never have seen the cash or the tiles.

On Amazon, just check whether the seller is actually Amazon, or another company using Amazon as a "marketplace". If it's Amazon, you're in very safe hands. If it is a third party company, just check their feedback ratings are comments to make sure they're trustworthy - buy you still get some cover from Amazon when buying through one of these third parties.

Just be aware that if you buy OUTSIDE the EU you may be liable for duty and tax which is above 20%.
I have bought a multitude of stuff online and never had a problem with the quality etc. I have been "caught" a few times for duty on larger items. If you purchase from UK then no problem with customs.

You definitely want to buy new? Berminghams currently have several d7000s and an 18-200 VRII available pre-owned. Total cost €1458. Don't know if they'd negotiate on that.

cheers there is €1000 of a difference between the D7000 & the D600....... that's double the price & i'm not sure its really worth it! the D7000 is a great camera even if it's gonna be replaced soon enough

I have the nikkor 18-200vr lens and its soft everywhere, mostly at the long end and wide open. The lens creep is a real pain in the arse when walking around with it also. I would not buy another. Ken Rockwells review makes it look to good to be true.

The tamron 17-50 2.8. is a real nice alternative as already suggested, lovely bit of glass if ya dont need a superzoom and dont get hung up on brands to much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭TomasMan

On the 18-200mm, I also had it and as previous poster said it wasn't very sharp. I wouldn't buy it again.

I'm in the market for D7000 and was going to buy it locally but the price difference is huge.
I wouldn't mind paying extra 100 euro on top of the online price to buy it here but 240 is too much. Even shops like Jessops and Currys in UK are selling them for more than 220 euro cheaper than down here.

    Conns have
"Free dry-dust sensor cleaning on demand and while you wait for the life of your Digital SLR"
I'm not sure whether other other cameras do this.
