I can't imagine how a diesel Altea would be expensive to run generally, the cost to change will be hefty and the savings minimal I would think.

True the only savings would be on road tax but if you are changing anyway a Kia Ceed would be a good option..

its actually the amount of km's that i am currently doing cost of maintaining an older car where things are starting to go wrong at non ideal times, was too used to just being able to go out and start her, never really had to many issues until i suddenly was covering the guts of 1000km per week.

All the above was fine while i was working but have went back to college hence the commuting and honestly the costs of running and maintaining are not there currently.

however i am due to get a few bob from some shares so am looking to upgrade keeping in mind i may be a student who commutes alot for next two years or so.

since becoming a student i am getting screwed on insurance renewals and am getting sick of paying so much on tax, but hopefully a smaller engine more economical car is the way to go.

    tks for input

Have a look at a Laguna III 1.5 dCi. Cheap to run and tax @ €225 per year. Standing the test of time very well with next to zero problems reported. Still far cheaper than their rivals to buy. Should be plenty of Dynamiques and Privileges around with low miles to choose from.

Spending thousands trading up to save a few hundred on running costs doesn't make sense to me.

Doing high mileage puts less strain on a car, assuming its mostly motorway mileage.

You just need to do some simple sums, how much is it going to cost you to upgrade, and how long will it take the new car to save you the amount its costs to upgrade, taking into account things like maintenance costs etc.
