    Hi folks,

Hopefully someone can help me try to decide what to purchase.
Budget is 8 -10 k,looking for a car with plenty of leg room.
    annual mileage approx 10,000 km

I had been thinking Ford Mondeo/Avensis, what are your opinions on both of these 1.6 petrol? I drove a petrol & diesel Mondeo today and loved the car, space etc. did notice the petrol mondeo was a bit dead compared to the diesel. On the mileage I am doing would it be feasible to go with Diesel?Or what about 1.8 petrol, would be very heavy on juice?
Daily round trip to work is 30km (all motorway)
any other recommendations? not interested in passat btw...
    Cheers..

If your going for Diesel go for the Avensis D4D engines are bullit proof.

How do you mean? As in the injectors don't fail, the flywheels don't go, the engine ancillaries like the aircon pump last more than a few years?

Or do you mean the block itself can withstand gunfire?

Has anyone opinions on 1.6 petrol Mondeo? rough mpg ?

also my average mileage per year is 10,000 miles not 10,000 km as I advised earlier.

what about Mondeo diesel 1.8 , MPG ?

A 1.6 in either car will be worse than useless. It will have no power of any description and you will need to rev the stones off it to make meaningful progress. This will result in dire mpg.

The Mondeo is infinitely superior to the Avensis, in every possible way.

I reckon a 1.6 Avensis would be slightly better on fuel than a 1.6 Mondeo though. The Avensis is a lighter car.

OP, have you looked at the Mazda 6 1.8 litre? Only driving 10k miles per year makes buying a diesel pointless to be honest.

Probably, but it's still going to be pretty bad - they drink fuel on the motorway thanks to the overly short gearing, although they're not too bad at around 90-100 kph. The 1.8 is lighter on juice because it has more power and longer gearing.

The 1.6 in the Avensis is weedy (the 1.8 is no rocket either but it is grand), so I can only imagine how bad a 1.6 Mondeo is.

That's a big car for a 1.6. Do you need leg room in the back? Because even a Mini has plenty of leg-room in front if you don't use the back seats.

Just goin on what I heard... Toyota corolla 1.4 diesel is supposedly one of the most reliable cars around... they even have some chain where a belt is in most other cars, I was advised to look for one, but they were so rare and out of budget I couldnt unfortunately.

The diesel would be more powerful if its a 1.9 if i am correct!? I dont know a thing really! I recently bought a 1.6 audi A4... I absolutely love it. I understand how people enjoy getting into their car to drive, cause thats me now :D

your annual mileage is similar to mine. I was also thinking of a 1.6 but too many stories of the Mondeo being a pig with that engine size I opted to go for a 1.8 Mazda 6. You will get a nice one for your budget.

My father has an 08 1.6 mondeo. The mpg ranges from 28 in stop start driving to 32 around town up to 40 on the motorway (at 110/120 km/h). the gearing is quite high so it actually feels lively enough - it has about 120bhp which is the same as the old mondy's 1.8. Haven't driven the mazda but the mondy is much better than the avensis imo.

    Think there's 125 and 109hp versions of that 1.6 TI-VCT engine.

As is typical, the Paddy spec 1.6s are 110 PS only, even though in the previous Mondeo the 1.8 was available in both 110 PS and 125 PS. In the UK they were offered the 125 PS, but of course in the UK they all buy 2.0 TDCis with a lot more power and torque:)!

Thanks folks for all the info, most helpful so far.
Mondeo 1.6 is a no go so really ,also took the bro's 06 Avensis 1.6 for a spin and wasn't too keen.

Gonna bring a Mazda 1.8 for a spin over the next few days and see what I think.

While we are at it,gonna throw another one in there:D

Opel Insignia 1.6 petrol, assume again it would be dead as a doornail?

Gonna hit the car dealers over the weekend and test drive what I can!

The insignia is 115hp but pretty much the same as the mondeo and avensis power wise.

The 1.6 Insignia is also €677 tax wise as well, so definitely a no-no! If you're spending that much on tax, it could at least be on a properly nice and quick car, like a 3.0 litre BMW or Merc!

    My 08 1.8 TDCI Mondeo returns on average 48MPG motorway 80% @110KPH

Driven at 120KPH returns about 45-46MPG.

I'd imagine if motorway use is not your main journey type the fuel econemy will be closer to 40MPG.

    Its a big car!
